It just baffles me as to why a great baseball program like LSU never has more than 1 really good pitcher. Teams like Vandy, Florida, Fullerton, and many more consistently have 2 or 3 dominant starting pitchers.

I agree, we will have two consistently good starting pitchers most often, but those schools just seem to have depth from top to bottom. I don't think its a recruiting issue, over the past few years we've lost a few very good arms... Marshall, Godfrey, Trent (though he may have been booted off the team?)

That was his biggest issue this season too.

Got a scouting report on him (or other arms) we should look at for an immediate contribution?

Yeah, but just think what we could have done with him instead of without him. I'm not content with just going to Omaha or making Supers

I'm not either, but let's be completely honest, all we've ever seen or heard about Latz is potential. He had a couple of short, decent outings, and a couple of train wrecks. Even if he hadn't decided to leave, I wouldn't be going into next season expecting much out of him until he shows he can pitch consistently.

This currently puts LSU with only 3 LHP on the roster (not counting Brennan Breaux):

Nick Bush who is coming off surgery
Blair Frederick, a true freshman from Brother Martin
Jared Poche, who still has a chance to sign with the Padres

That's brutal and falls in Dunn's lap

Out of the 5 pitchers we got that year only Lange has lived up to the hype. Maybe Norman will one day. The other 3 were a waste. We will need Poche to come back and need a freshman or McKay/Gilbert to step up.

Eh. Cartwright is going through it now.

I don't think Cartwright's had anything to do with overuse. Seemed like just a fluke injury.

and that Florida team that had 3 pitchers selected in the first 2 rounds, 5 in the first 4 rounds, and 6 in the first ten rounds...went two and Q in Omaha. Over the long haul, our pitching has been outstanding. It is very rare for any college team to have 3 great weekend starters. Having two top shelf starters and a serviceable third puts you in elite company. This notion that there are all these teams with a solid 1-2-3 weekend rotation is a myth. It's very rare at this level. We had 2 top 10 draft picks in our rotation in 2012 and a serviceable Sunday starter in Ryan Eades. We had current major leaguers Nick Rumbelow and Nick Goody in the bullpen as well as Chris Cotton. That's 4 current MLB players and a AAA player. It doesn't get that much better in college.

I don't get Latz leaving. From my perspective it makes no sense. Paps needs to have a long talk with him Uncle Jed style.

So now we're losing from this year's staff:
Smith
Bugg
DeVall
Stallings
Poche?
Latz?

Here's hoping Dunn can do as good a job with a young staff as did Cannizaro with the hitters this year.

ETA: to reflect that Stallings signed

a lot of college coaches destroy a kids arm. look what augie at tejas did to that kid in '09. PM is as protective of his pitchers arms as it gets.

I compared him to Kevin Gausman a couple weeks ago in his delivery.

6'6 RHP lanky build with a high leg kick and slight jerk. 3/4 arm slot where as Gausman came more over the top. FB sits 93-94 mph with an above average slider right now that's an out pitch.

He will be counted on early and he has everything he needs to take over the Friday spot from Lange in 2018.
