Long, but trying to give all the info.

Went to the DMV to get a new license today and they told me my license was suspended by the Dept. of Renevue. Call them to get everything straightened out and after 40 minutes on the phone they tell me I owe $3,150 to the state from back in 2013. I typically get money back from the Fed and state but that year I bought a house and cashed in some CD's for the down payment, so I owed.

I'm almost 100% sure I mailed a check for this, but I'm having trouble finding the paper trail for it. If I can't show it was paid I'm sure I'll be on the hook for what I originally owed, my question is am I liable for the fines they are trying to add on to the original amount? This is the first I'm hearing of additional money being owed. No notices in the mail and no mention of it when I filed for my refund the past two years.

Any advice on how to handle this would be greatly appreciated.

Did your address change, maybe the notices were going to your old house?

You can always ask for the penalties to be waived.

They are also pretty spot on about scooping up refunds if you owe them money. That is how I found out about an issue I had. They tried to claim I lived in Louisiana for a year when I lived in Texas the entire year. So, all the notices supposedly went to Texas, and they all went out after the 1 year mail forward expired. What's pathetic is that they sent a letter to Texas demanding that I lived in Louisiana, and despite the fact I had filed later Louisiana resident tax returns with a Louisiana address... they still sent the letter to Texas. So the fact that they didn't grab your refund does surprise me a bit.

Saying you know you owed but were never told you still owed is not going to be a winning argument.

If you never filed your state you probably owe less than the $3150 because they base it off your federal report and don't include your state deductions.

There was a year the state owed me less than a $100 and I forgot to file them. A couple of years later I get a notice in the mail that I owe $3000+ in taxes and can't get my fishing license renewed until they receive payment.

Pulled up my taxes saved on the computer. Mailed them off and received a $67 dollar check six weeks later.
