Since we hosted WC 1994, all of the USMNT's biggest games on home soil have been either Gold Cup finals (or last year's playoff) or WCQs against Mexico. I think this semifinal is bigger than all of those. What else stacks up?

Why would this be bigger than a WCQ against Mexico?

Idk maybe because it'll be against the best player in the world and one of the top nations in the world in a tournament that is essentially for the bragging rights of the west.

The only team that didn't take this seriously was Brazil and that's bc they had the Olympics.

You have 5 down votes and I have no idea why.

Why the frick would a fake copa America semifinal that holds no meaning be more important than a WCQ? You are all living in the moment

shite the game against Guatemala at the end of March was more important

Copa is really the only tournament where a big meaningful game can take place on US soil outside of WCQ. Even then, with Brazil not taking the tournament seriously, it kind of puts a damper on it.

I'm enjoying this tournament, but all the winner gets is a trophy - not a qualification to a larger tournament.

For that, I'd say WCQs against Mexico and Costa Rica are bigger.

I would say the games against the Costa Rica, T&T, Jamaica, and Canadas are bigger than the games against Mexico. Mexico is pretty much a given to qualify. We need to make sure those other teams get as few points as possible.

Bc we're going to qualify for the WC. We're certainly going to make it to the hex. The whole point of the qualifiers and making the WC is to play meaningful games against the worlds best on an international stage. That's what we're being afforded Tuesday.

Yes the WC is a much much bigger deal than this copa America. But again I don't know why we keep degrading our own accomplishments by calling it a fake copa. Everyone but Brazil brought their A teams and is putting in seemingly maximum effort. Suarez almost strangled his head coach bc they wouldn't put him in. Sanchez almost yelled at a teammate until deafness for giving up a goal. It's as real a tournament as the confed cup or whenever we guest play at the "real" copa. This is a chance to win silverware

We barely made it to the hex last time and we're a loss to Guatemala this time from not making the hex. It is not a given that we qualify.

No see that's what you're missing. We almost didn't qualify for the World Cup. We already forgot this? It was just over 2 months ago. That game mattered 10x as much as this one. Maybe 100x.

Gold cup games with confed cup implications are bigger as well.

Again, it's fricking dope that we are playing Argentina in the semi but that doesn't make it the biggest game on us soil in 20 years. That's fricking outrageous.

A game where a loss literally cannot hurt you cannot possibly be the biggest game.

I'm not agreeing with that statement. But just bc it's not a standard tournament doesn't mean it's automatically lower than every other competitive game. Again qualifiers are important as a whole, but not every individual one is huge. In fact very few are HUGE games.

Secondly I don't think this Copa is any less important than the Confed Cup. They're both "semi real" tournaments

From a social context, yes. Give me a break about the WCQ's. Americans don't give a shite about qualifiers. It's the USA v Messi in a major tournament semi on US soil. It's massive.

Right. Given context, it's not hard to figure it out. There's a trophy on the line and the best players from this half of the earth are playing for it. Brazil brought plenty of good players. They just played like shite and got beat out. This tournament is huge.

So much American soccer inferiority complex in here. Shame. None of you pussies would look one of our players in the eye and tell them this tournament doesn't matter.

and here it is folks, the dumbest post in the history of the SB. we are playing argentina, at full strength, in in a competitive match, as part of a major historical tournament, and this mother fricker is acting like we are playing tahiti in a friendly.

You can have a big game without it being the biggest game. This tournament doesn't hold a fricking candle to the World Cup as far as public attention. We played in a game two months ago that could have prevented us from playing in the World Cup. That game could have fricking DESTROYED soccer in the US. How is that not more important than this upcoming game, which will be fun and great if we win, but have literally zero repercussions if we lose?

I have a feeling we are looking at the 4-0 result and acting like that game wasn't enormous in hindsight. Which is a crock of lies. That game aside, there have been plenty of home qualifiers against Mexico that were bigger as well.
