Tourists can only rent a car from the airport?

I got hit with this little tidbit.
Friend flew in to stay with me a few days, and after the fact she decided she wanted to rent a car. I'm going to have to drive her to the airport to get a car because the local agencies won't rent you car without a local utility bill or something like that.

Doesn't sound right. I flew to Denver and rental cars from the airport were running $100+ daily cause it was a big holiday weekend.
I booked a hotel for the night with a shuttle from the airport and then went to a non-airport rental place to get a car for $30 a day without any local utility bills or whatever.
Maybe its a Louisiana thing

Seems a little strange. Is it just a local thing? I rented one in Hawaii away from the airport. And I've never had to show a utility bill when renting where I live. Just a drivers license, insurance card, and pay them.

I have had odd issues with rental cars similar - maybe try another vendor.

I rented one at a local New Orleans office and they never asked me for a utility bill.

I did the exact same thing in two different states last month.

Maybe you shouldn't rent from T-Boy's rent-all

I've never heard of this & I've rented many cars, both locally and while out of town.
ETA: Mostly from Enterprise.

I rented a car from enterprise, nowhere near an airport, in Albuquerque, New Mexico with a North Carolina license.
I notice that you mention your friend was a woman. So. yea.

I rented a car in downtown Portland last year. I've also rented cars in Manhattan. Never any problems.

Friend makes 6 figures, has great credit, and has $600k in assets.....but can't rent a car in Gonzales? The rules of this world make little sense to me.
is she under 25? some rental car companies have stricter policies for younger drivers.

Yep.
Also, several hotels have rental car agencies in their buildings.

Your friend must not be using a credit card. There are no qualms about using a credit card, but when you decide to use a debit card or even cash you open yourself up to more issues.
quote:
All Enterprise rental locations accept major credit cards for rental car payment. The credit card must be in the renter's name and have available credit. At the time of publication, select Enterprise branches accept Visa and MasterCard debit cards as a form of payment, however additional requirements must be met, such as providing a round-trip ticket at an airport location. A limited number of Enterprise locations accept cash as a valid form of payment though cash customers are often required to present additional documentation such as two current utility bills, a recent pay stub, proof of insurance and personal references before the rental car is issued.
