Overdosing on Immodium AD is a thing now

The over-the-counter anti-diarrhea medication Imodium®, or its key ingredient loperamide, is increasingly being abused by people attempting to self-treat their opioid addiction, with sometime fatal results. Two case studies outlining the phenomenon were published online in Annals of Emergency Medicine.
"Loperamide's accessibility, low cost, over-the-counter legal status and lack of social stigma all contribute to its potential for abuse," said lead study author William Eggleston, PharmD, of the Upstate New York Poison Center, in Syracuse, New York. "People looking for either self-treatment of withdrawal symptoms or euphoria are overdosing on loperamide with sometimes deadly consequences. Loperamide is safe in therapeutic doses but extremely dangerous in high doses."
The paper outlines two case studies of patients with histories of substance abuse who attempted to self-treat opioid addictions with massive doses of loperamide. Both patients overdosed and emergency medical services were called. The patients were treated with cardiopulmonary resuscitation, naloxone and standard Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Both patients died.

Solid societal problem.

Kratom is a better option

No social stigma?
Immodium AD definitely has a stigma about it.

Don't know if his article is being a little disingenuous.

Loperamide at very high doses produces opiate-like toxicity. Some studies have shown naloxone could have a beneficial effect in these patients.

So they aren't dying from an overdose of poop in system

Opioids + Immodium = extreme blockage. Sounds fricking terrible

It produces opiate-like toxicity because it targets mu opioid receptors. Structurally, it is a combination of meperidine and methadone. It is generally considered to not have CNS activity because it poor dissolution, roughly 40% bioavailability, and is a strong substrate for efflux (gets pumped out as quickly as it gets in). There have been studies performed that show nanoparticles packed with loperamide and coated with polysorbate 80 can sneak into the CNS and cause the typical opioid effects.

Even when I've got the worst "stomach virus" ever and am getting dehydrated, I go as long as I can before taking Immodium AD. The resulting stomach pain from not being able to shite properly for the next week is not worth it. I couldn't imagine willingly taking remotely enough to overdose.

I know people it worked for to get off dope.
The people who died were taking like 200+ pills a day for long periods of time and went in to cardiac arrest I think. I read a story where some person kept going in to cardiac arrest while they were still awake and would get the AED shock thing done to them while still conscious multiple times, sounds pretty terrible.
The people I know started at like 20 and then tapered it down over a period of like 3 - 4 weeks.

Immodium AD got me through tailgating and the LSU/Auburn game in 2007. It has my respect.

How does Immodium help with opioid dependency?

Kratom is a plain leaf that can be used for pain, anxiety, depression and opiate withdrawal. you can not overdose, and it only has a small effect no mater how much you take. but it is close to being made illegal in some states like Alabama. Louisiana has passed a bill for 18 plus. One of Alabamas' arguments is that "people were using this to replace their heroin" like it was a bad thing.

We need a basic IQ/reasoning skills screening test for all politicians.
