Tell Me About Ally Bank

Is it the best online bank (as many sites suggest)? Who here uses it? What are the pros and cons?
Thinking of transferring my checking and savings accounts to Ally for a couple reasons - convenience, and higher rates of return. Thoughts?

I use it for cash savings.
It's an online bank
That's pretty much it.

I avoid it for moral reasons.

Worst costumer service I've ever ran across.
Linked my checking with them in 2014 and started a saving with a minimum deposit.
Checked backed...account is no longer linked, and they want ME to jump through hoop after hoop to fix the problem.

We should all do business online and with 800 numbers if we save money.
We should from our llc's and s-corps without attorneys, and use Legal zoom.
We should find the absolute cheapest auto insurance possible.
We should never develop relationships with our accountants, attorneys, insurance agents and bankers.
Cheaper is always better. And 800 numbers and online businesses are always superior to personal relationships and loyalty.
Said very few successful people ever.

I've had extra cash in cd's and a savings account there for about 5 years. I think I'm gonna move my checking over too. My wells account pays me about 0.05% so kind of dumb to keep much extra cash there instead of ally.

I get that, but I don't keep extra cash in a bank, or in cd's, so I go someplace where skippy the banker makes an appointment and comes to my office, rather than a place I have to talk to flo the 800 number customer service rep.
Just my preference.
Just my preference.

Interesting. Most online sites I've read say their customer service is one of their best features.

Small banks and big banks are two distinct product sets. It just depends on if you want to be a big fish in a little pond or have a badass app so you don't have to talk to some dense salesman posing as a banker.

I want a relationship. I have that. If I need a loan, I don't want to talk to 6 different people, I want to make a call, have the money transferred to my account, and let the paperwork catch up.
Having said this, I use two online brokers, and one full service adviser. There are disadvantages to both.
My point is automation more than national versus community bank. And if I pay 3.25 for a signature loan at a community bank, and that is .12 higher than Bank of America could do it for, that's the price I pay for an ongoing business relationship.

Out of curiosity, what are these?

I have a savings account I use only for vacations there. Not bad, but I like my local bank and other than the 1% interest I get everything else from my local bank.
I just have Ally set up to pull a set amount weekly from multiple accounts.

Just change your name and everything will be fine.

i had a ton of issues with ally bank, and moved my money out of it. yeah, the rates were better than my other accounts. But I had issues moving money IN and OUT.

Is Ally all paid up? It seems like it from what I can find.
If so, this seems to put it on the same moral ground as:
Citi
BOA
Chase
Wells Fargo
Goldman, etc.
Or did they do something extra shady?

I've never had an issue with Ally. Money goes in easy, comes out easy. I can't imagine why anyone would put their emergency fund anywhere else.

You can get 1% with a Capital One money market. I've always had great experience with their customer service and I like their online features as well.
