New Orleans monument removal question

Why do people want the the Battle of Liberty palace monument removed? All it is is a monument commemorating an uprising that happened during Reconstruction. How is a marker for a historic event "racist"?

Because it celebrates an uprising by white folk against the new rulers post civil war that were attempting to "integrate" southern societies?
Either way, get over it. It's done. Itll be ok.

From wiki:
quote:
In 1891, the city erected a monument to commemorate and praise the insurrection from the Democratic Party point of view, which at the time was in firm political control of the city and state and was in the process of disenfranchising most blacks. The white marble obelisk was placed at a prominent location on Canal Street. In 1932, the city added an inscription that expressed a white supremacist view.
In 1974, the rethinking of race relations after the Civil Rights Movement caused the city to add a marker near the monument explaining that the inscription did not express current philosophy. After major construction work on Canal Street in 1989 required that the monument be temporarily removed, it was relocated to a less prominent location and the inscription was altered. In July 2015, New Orleans mayor Mitch Landrieu proposed removing the monument altogether[2] and in December 2015 the New Orleans City Council voted to remove the monument, along with three others deemed a "nuisance".

more like it honors those who died

So you're ok with people forgetting that this event ever happened?

That's what revisionists do.

TBF, that's a replacement marker put over the old inscription because the old inscription was actually pretty racist. I don't have an issue with this one coming down.
but it's telling that when there were widespread protests over this monument in the 90s no one mentioned REL, or Davis or PGTB.

Because people are incredibly stupid.

People celebrate. Monuments don't celebrate. They just exist. Political correctness cannot allow thoughts that disagree to exist.

Yeah i know, but if that inscription isn't up there, I don't see what the problem is.

If one monument ought to be removed, it's The Battle of Liberty Place monument. It promoted the White League, white supremacy and was basically put in place as a big "frick you" to blacks and Reconstruction.
When the Rivergate was torn down and Harrah's built, it was removed and stored away. Few people probably even missed it and/or really gave a shite. The poster boy for white supremacy, David Duke, sued to have it re-erected in a public place. Now it's stuck between the aquarium and the flood wall and I'm willing to bet everything I own that no tourist has ever said, "I'm going to N.O. to see the Battle of Liberty Place monument." Most locals probably didn't know, or care, where it was until Mitch started his bullshite.

Well, to be entirely accurate, it only "honors" the deceased who started the riot. No "honor" for the people they attacked, beat, shot and killed.

all this.
it's also interesting that no one is bitching about the statue of Albert Sidney Johnston in Metairie Cemetery.

You do realize that that is an old picture and it doesn't say that anymore.

You do realize it did say that though, right?
It's a symbol of a time that needs to be forgotten.
I'm against the civil war monuments to leaders coming down, but this 'thing' it can be used for breakwater for all I care.

It maybe the history buff in me but if they fixed the inscription, I don't see the problem with the monument being there. It's still a significant enough event that shows that Reconstruction did not go as smoothly as everyone would think and how different of a state it was, even after the civil war. It should be marked in some way.
I'm also against the statues being removed, but I can kinda see why some people would want them removed.

As a "history buff", I'd think you'd want the original inscription to remain intact. After all, that was the popular sentiment at that point in history.

Does anyone, even "non- history buffs", actually think Reconstruction went smoothly? It was a clusterfrick, which yielded actions like the Liberty Place riots.
As far as how different things were and remembering our past history goes, there's a USSC case that serves that purpose. Surely, as a history buff, you're familiar with Plessy v. Ferguson.
