Germany would have still been destroyed, most of their manufacturing plants were gone by this point, plus the Luftwaffe was running out of qualified pilots to fly the dwindling fleet of aircraft. They simply couldn't have carried on fighting two fronts indefinitely.

The British and the United States would continue to bomb the shut out of the ruhr valley and annihilate German industry. Then, you probably would have seen them make a strong push through Italy to drive north into the south of Germany. Not the best plan as you can read generals talk about how much they hated going on the offensive in Italy but it probably would have worked if we committed to it

there were a few years we had the bomb and no one else did. we could have taken Russia out in that scenario. of course, more would have been spent on making more atomic bombs initially, but at that brief moment in time, we had the capacity to rule the world, so to speak.

would not have happened in 1944. you likely see a shift to Churchill's "soft underbelly" approach and the Russians finish way further west than they did in reality

This.

Operation Dragoon with the landings in southern France happened a couple months after Normandy, so we would have been in France regardless.

Basically, the war may have taken a little bit longer, the Russians would have gone further west, possibly taking over all of Germany, and an a-bomb may have been used in Europe....but Germany still would have lost.

If you want to read a good book about the war in Italy and southern France, read:

Had dinner Sunday night with a Bataan Death March survivor (American Marine, note not a former Marine).

He's 96.

The subject did not come up in polite conversation.

I always privately thank him when I see him and he always says he was just doing his job.

It is "The Man in the High CASTLE" and it is based on an excellent, and very disturbing book of the same name by Phillip K. Dick. (He also wrote the short story that Blade Runner was based on.)

In June of 1944 Germany taking control of Britain was not a possibility, even if the Germans had totally crushed the Normandy landings.

1. The British fleet was still intact
2. Germany still did not have a navy
3. Germany still lacked the means to transport an invasion force across the channel
4. The first thing Germany would have done if they'd have defeated the Normandy invasion would be to transfer everything they could from the West to the Eastern Front. I doubt they'd leave much more than traffic cops back in France. Remember that along with the Normandy invasion coming in June of 1944, on the Eastern Front the Soviets also launched an offensive that totally wiped an entire German Army Group off the map. As bad of a defeat as Stalingrad was for the Germans, the defeat inflicted on the Germans in June 1944 during Operation Bagration totally dwarfed it. Stalingrad cost Germany their best army. Bagration cost Germany their best Army Group.

It would have been a very tough situation on Allies, as Soviets needed to get the Nazis to fight a 2 front war so they could regroup, and Just going up Italy would have made it easy to hold Allies knowing that was the path they were talking into Europe. A-bomb was not available in 1943, so if we did not get into France/western Europe, Soviets would have fallen and been months more war, death and destruction. Z-day of Japan is something I would have been interested to know the casualte rate from that operation

They thought we only had one of them. The emporer tried to surrender, but a military coup stopped him. However, after the second one, there was the threat that we had a third one with tokyo's name on it if they did not surrender. The emporer surrendered so as not to see the capital vaporized.

I wonder why we didn't nuke Tokyo first.

The Allies would have just doubled down on Operation Dragoon. If Overlord failed it would have failed quickly. The losses would have been catastrophic to the British Army, but the Americans had more than enough Army to get firmly established in Southern France. Once that was accomplished the Allies would have won a war of attrition exploiting superior logistic capability.

I wonder what changes would have been made to Allied High Command if Overlord failed.
