Opiates.

And how do we know this is true? I've only seen maybe two suicides called such in the obituaries over the years.

Liberal agenda being forced and driven with every commercial and stereotype change and status quo change. It was the right thing for us a long time ago, but they never let up and never lost power.

We need to learn from ricky gervais... "just because you're offended doesn't mean you're right." It should also be noted that just because you complain doesn't make you right, either.

Not sure I agree with that. Depression rates were likely as high way back when as they are now, it's just that it's been destigmatized in the past decade or so as we've learned more about it. Depression is not just people "not choosing to be happy". It literally changes how your brain works.

That being said, there are things that can be done to help, in addition to medicine and appropriate therapy...exercise being a big one.

That's an interesting idea there. Could the rising obesity rates(esp of children) be affecting this as well?

Of course, if true, some would comment about "opiate of the masses" and such. And while I'm sure that's true to some extent, I'd suggest alternatively the result could come from less of a focus on material things and selfish desires and more on peace and helping others.

Are you one of those people that also believes gay people can be "cured" by giving themselves to God?

Depression, in most cases, is a lot more complex than what people are focusing on. And I guarantee you there are many many people in your church struggling with it.

I'm not sure on that one. I've not seen or read a study that explored that correlation. Though it wouldn't surprise me at all if there was a connection.

But it's a known fact that the endorphins from exercising improve your mood, help with anxiety, etc. I deal with a lot of stress at work, and going for a run of a few miles completely knocks that anxiety out.

A lot of people are becoming disenfranchised due to:
Low employment opportunities
Student loans
Government that caters to the ultra-wealthy and doesn't seem to represent constituents
General lack of regard for human life from our officials (police shootings, lead in water, fracking, no telling what's in our food)
Our health care system is in shambles
Our mental health care system is the joke of the free world

The American Dream is for the most part dead and has turned into the American Nightmare. Barriers to entry for basically everything but prostitution and pron have skyrocketed over the last 50 years.

Not sure why the off-topic lashing out. Sensitive much?

I agree it is complex, but not necessarily that it is more complex than what people are focus on.

That's very possible, even likely. Not one person in any church is perfect or above human frailties. But on the other side of that, I have seen people find peace and strength from their spiritual devotion to make it through as bad of circumstances as most people see (death of a child, financial turmoil).

Older whites cannot cope well with no longer being the dominant, privileged race.

We had quite a discussion in one of my sociology classes about this issue.

and not a one of you knew dick about older whites or appreciated them or their efforts and productivity that allowed you to have a class to discuss them with disdain.

Doubtful. Black men and women have the highest rates of obesity and the lowest rates of suicide.

Because you seem to believe that religion can prevent or cure depression. And I was curious if you were one of those that also believed it could "cure" other things.

Pffffttttt,no way it could be all the fricking smoking, type 2 diabetes, outrageously overweight fricks waddling around on their sad corpulent, disgusting bodies

I agree. No way in hell that enough people are using heroin or committing suicide to impact the life expectancy of all white people.

I'm not sure if obesity or anything related has any impact, but this is not really the correct way to conceptualize it. In other words, it's possible that obesity is a risk factor but something inherent to the black population is a protective factor.

Suicide rates among men are rising in pretty much every first world country (especially Japan and South Korea). Globalization, rising living costs, and independent women (sexist but true) are making it harder for the average man to compete and live up to societal standards.

Well these countries have some cultural issues that I believe supersede those other broad factors.

Besides Japan has had some economic issues that have persisted for decades that probably play a role.
