Amazon Prime Video now has 4 times as many movies as Netflix

As Netflix has shifted toward original (and exclusive) shows and movies, the size of its catalog has gone down.
Research last month showed that since January 2014, the number of titles available on Netflix in the US has shrunk by 31.7%. This was particularly pronounced in movies, where Netflix's selection had gone down by over 2,000 titles.
Netflix now actually has 4 times fewer movie titles than Amazon Prime Video, one of its major competitors (which recently rolled out a standalone option), according to research by Barclays.

But quantity isn't everything. Netflix's main thesis has been that original shows and movies drive more value for its customers, even if they are expensive to produce (and might be causing a reduction in overall catalog).
This theory has at least somewhat been borne out. Netflix originals have an average rating of 3.87 stars (out of 5), higher than the 3.47 stars "other content" averages, according to research by AllFlicks, a site that tracks Netflix's catalog.

I have Prime, and I only looked at movies on Amazon once, and it seemed like I had to pay for all of the ones I was interested in, so I never looked at it again. Is that not the case?

Netflix needs to get on a roll where they're churning out a new season for one of their original shows every month...that would be cool

That's because most of the content worth viewing isn't free and has to be rented to stream

Quality > quantity

I actually never watch movies on Netflix anyway. I watch the original programming or bingewatch stuff.

The pay for purchase and rentals are listed on the same page as the Prime ones, so it can be confusing.
Depending on what you use to stream, pay attention to the sub-headings in the Amazon app. There are sub-headings for Prime movies by Genre, and newly added. Those are all free to stream for Prime members.

I think I'd have to go with Netflix original shows over Amazon at this point. I watch both though.

I watch both as well. I do find that I'm watching Netflix less and less outside of their originals and most of the movies I watch are on Amazon.
Not really choosing sides on this, but let's not forget, when you're singing the praises of Netflix originals you have to include the Adam Sandler flicks too.

I still spend more time on Hulu and Netflix than Prime.
For some reason, I just dislike the Prime interface.

Prime is weird. Hate the interface on my blu-ray player. The one on my PS4 is fine. Love that they have a "Watch Trailer" option for their movies. Really miss that when i'm browsing Netflix.

agreed, the prime interface (through Roku) is pretty bad. I rarely ever watch anything besides TV shows on netflix. I think a lot of people do the same thing which is why netflix doesn't seem to have a huge library of movies.

I don't care if you have 18,405 movies for me to watch or 5,000 of them. I might be interested in watching 20 of them at best on each of the 3 services.
The only movie i've watched on any of them in the last 2 years was Wolf of Wall Street and the Chris Evans movie on the train, whatever it was called.
Hulu is a DVR replacement for cord cutters. Once i'm ready to switch to Vue, i'll drop Hulu since they have a cloud drive to save shows too.
the UI on Prime is shite and the only reason we have Prime is b/c of my wife ordering shite all the time from Amazon. I wouldn't pay for Prime if it was just movies and shows.
Netflix is a must with their original content and kids shows.

And yet Netflix is far superior.

I doubt every month would be possible. But I do agree that it would be great if they came out with new seasons for their original content more often.

Netflix has Marvel exclusives therefore Netflix > Everyone else.

Remember when Netflix had basically every movie you could ever want because the creators didn't understand the value of their products being available for streaming?
God damn that was a wonderful time to be alive.

The Prime interface on our TV is pretty cool. You can search for just free Prime movies or through pay-per view flicks. Although the selection isn't that great. We signed up for the Starz add on, they've got a lot of good movies on that (Recent Pixar movies, recent Marvel movies)

I almost never watch movies anymore. A recent release here or there, but those are almost never on Netflix anyway (I don't subscribe to the other services). Family movie night, every once in a while. Maybe if I stumble on something while changing channels. I can't imagine ever saying to myself, "I feel like watching (movie x) from (year y) tonight. I wonder if it is on Netflix or on demand." I will, however, pull up a random episode of Cheers or some other classic sitcom (b/c today's sitcoms are mostly terrible.)
Everyone in my family uses Netflix almost exclusively for TV shows.
