I just bought a house with about 1.3 acres. The lot is wooded in the back and backs up to a small neighborhood lake. I was thinking of putting an underground pet fence for my small dog. How hard is it to do this yourself? Does anyone have any recommendations for a wireless fence vs an underground one? How about tips/pro/cons of doing the underground/wireless fence versus a traditional 6' wooden fence? Thanks for all the help in advance.

Cons are that your dog runs through the barrier chasing a squirrel and can't get back in

Not hard. Mine covers around 10 acres and took 1 day to install. It is an innotek brand, and we have 1 collar. Be sure to get the lightning surge protector and protect the system. I bought it from dogfencediy.com. Their price was either best or very competitive, and their customer service and support was excellent. We've had our system for 5 years and have not had any issues, other than my dog has somehow figured out how to get out of the collar. That is my only complaint - the collar band is rubber. I think a nylon collar would stay on better, but I've not found one that fits the shocker.

For installation, rent a machine used to dig and bury cable. You only need to bury it 1-2 inches, but this will save you a tremendous amount of time (and work).

This has not been a problem for me. If they are properly trained, that barrier is always top of mind. And I say this as an owner of the highest strung dog there is - a border collie.

think I've posted this before...

1.5 acres, innotek, set mover on lowest possible setting and cut the track where I wanted to run the line, used my gas edger to dig the "trench" within the mower track, buried wire using hands and rubber mallet to pack dirt around/on top of wire. Has been 4 or 5 years now and it still works. used a grinder to widen gap in driveway to lay wire and covered with concrete crack sealer. my dogs will lie close to the boundary and watch the squirrels run back and forth. only time they've gone outside of boundary was when winter coat grew in one year and I didn't install the longer prongs on their collar. now I shave and install longer prongs in winter and no trouble.

I am actually installing my second underground fence (different location). I am fencing in about 2.5 acres. I would recommend renting a walk behind edger to make your trench.

I bought the regular PetSafe system that you can find at Lowes. I had to buy some extra rolls of wire, some extra flags and rent the edger. I have about 300 bucks in it.

Its taken me about 2 days of work. In part because I used a stick edger instead of a walk behind so I was breaking frequently to give my back rest.

My first system worked great. Good luck.

I've had the wireless Petsafe system for 2 years and it works great. Just plug it in, set the distance, and put the collar on the dog. Max radius is 90' from the unit and it took no more than 2 days for my beagle to learn it all. He stays outside all day and never gets in the road or in neighbors' trash any more.

Mine covers 2.5 acres and took less than day to install. I had a cousin do 10 acres and he made a trencher or his job that he let me use, goes on the back of my tractor. You can rent a similar machine at any equipment real place.
One con is not knowing when the battery in the collar is dead and the dog figuring it out before you do, so keep spare batteries. I had a collar go bad recently and had to scramble to get a new one as we were about to leave town, so use a brand that is sold locally to be sure you can get parts in a hurry.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate all the responses. It doesn't sound too bad to install oneself.

I did just under an acre with Sportdog from Amazon. Used a gas edger and a few blades, cut concrete at a joint with a demo saw. My first unit got fried from a lightning strike. Sportdog replaced it free of charge in the warranty window. Next unit, I bought the surge protector for the loop and I drove a separate ground rod for the unit. 5 years later, still working great (knock on wood)

Lady forgot to put the collar on her dog. She went running after the dog carrying that collar. It zapped her so hard that is floored (grassed) her.
