Why are we creating more of a burden on tax payers to give people who really don't need assistance paying for college free money?

to keep top kids in state

it also frees up scholarships for TX kids who are outside of the top 10%

Would you give food stamps to someone who stays out of trouble, pays their taxes, volunteers on a regular basis, and could afford to pay for their own meals?

i don't believe in food stamps, so no. you can combine all sorts of words after "to someone who" and the answer will be no

I guess it depends on what school she was at.

Depending on what you call high scores, this is not true.

Give me your quick argument against foodstamps if you don't mind. I'm curious about your stance

Are they raising the gpa that needs to be maintained to keep tops? That seems to be a more important issue.

This. The college gpa needed to maintain it is IMO a more important factor in qualifying than a single test. Raise the GPA to maintain it and you keep the serious students in school. I'd also like to see percentage covered based on major to keep kids majoring in STEM fields in state.

yeah

also the level of class.

you can test well in school without learning the material a lot easier than you can develop your thinking for a test like the ACT

in college and high school i aced a ton of classes through mental devices and cramming. luckily i actually learned the important ones (math, science, etc)

Its not that hard to get. Some people are better at standardized tests. My brother graduated HS with a 2.6 and he made a 27 on the ACT figure that one out for me?

biggest argument is that it raises the prices of food, which has a negligible effect on poor people (but it feels good to DO something!)

same with section 8

a legitimate temporary program (say, a max of 8-12 months of stamps over a 36 month period), i could get behind

So spend 1.6 billion so students can stay in state only to not find jobs in their field and work as plant operators. Seems legit.

Exactly. I took the ACTs twice. 27 each time. Only prep I did was half arse glance through some ACT prep book(that I checkout out from the library) the night before I took the test.

one of my best friends had about a 2.5 and got a 31 like me

he's smart as shite but didn't put in a lot of work on stupid crap in high school but actually learned tools necessary to do well (plus he's smart)

Are you comparing your single experience to education as a whole? What was your "gifted" class curriculum? Where you, or where you not, prepped to take the ACT?

Your alleged knowledge of what other kids made on the ACT's 15 years ago is a pretty silly thing to base your argument on.

I've said it before, I'll say it again.

Gpa is a measure of work and self discipline.

ACT and SAT scores are measures of intelligence.

Ok. Where did you go to high school and what kind of classes did you take?

I'm willing to bet you did not go to a poor inner city high school with a crime problem and a less than enthusiastic teaching staff.

I did absolutely nothing to prep. Hell once I took it in the same clothes as the night before hung over from a party. I got like a 23 but all I needed was an 18 or something stupid low to get tops so I didnt really care. I graduated high school in 98.

Which is why I'm glad they're making it more stringent. It should be based on academic achievement and not if you're poor.
