it's as simple as this...he's been in the Big Ten before, now in the SEC...he knows where the real football is played and how bad the Big Ten really is...you have one or two teams a year from it doing anything but we have like 10 teams doing something every year...he wants to stay in the toughest conference in america and win at the best school in that conference...he can see more championships in his future here and rebuilding something in ann arbor just isn't that appealing...money was never a factor, just his coaching legacy

This article from the Free Press gives a pretty credible explanation of what happened.

Bill Martin is operating the same way he operated when he hired basketball coach John Beilein last spring. In a sense, it is the exact opposite of how the rest of us get jobs. Martin wants to hammer out the contract details first, then conduct the interview. That way, there is no chance of money killing the deal.

With that said, why was Coach Carr paid so little compared to the coaches in the SEC and not all of them have won a National Championship like Carr and none of them come close to the revenue Big Blue generates?
Carr never was about the money, plus have you seen his record the last 5 years.

I agree with that whole article. Good job skip for keeping your guy.

Not hardly, Michael Rosenberg, writer for the Detroit Free Press (where this quote comes from), has no connections inside the program at any level. His opinion, thinking is no better than anyone's on this board or any other board.
Martin did follow the process as outlined with John Beilein. Rosenberg only knew that after it was done. He had no clue what the process was while it was happening. And hiring the next football coach is not the same as hiring the new b-ball coach at Mich.
As far as Rosenberg's list of candidates, well it shows his ignorance. Tedford, Ferentz. Schiano, Grobe, Pinkel, Trgovac (former Mich player under Bo and current Carolina Panther DC), may all be on the list, but this is the same gut that thought Les was a done deal at Mich -- their only choice. I am not buying his gut feel without evidence.
At this point it is my opinion, and only my opinion, that the choice is really big or it is a totally unexpected one.
My money is now on Chris Petersen from Boise St.

Looks to me like Michigan has some of the same problems BAMA has had in the past, too many chiefs and not enough indians.

Thanks -- I understand. I just meant that the part about negotiating salary before conducting the interview seemed to fit in with what went down yesterday.

By the way, good job Sat. night. With all the injuries and distractions that was a gutsy performance.
Hope you guys get a shot at the NC now. It would seem to make the most sense, but the BCS is a fickle mistress.
I am a bit torn, not that I can root for OSU, but the Big Ten has a lot of credibility riding on them if they are one of the players. If LSU is the opponent...OSU laying another rotten egg like last year is a real possibility. If that happens our stature as a conference might fall below the Big East's.

jo paterno`s base salary is 500g ,any thing else is not made public
Posted on 12/2/07 at 10:14 pm to Bayoutigre
500k is all of his salary...thats it...

well michigan wants to wait and see what they could get on january 7th. if he doesn't beat ohio state with lsu talent, how is he going to do it with michigan talent. if he wins, becomes a money contest, if he loses, neither LSU or Michigan will want him.

Is it really that hard to understand that some of the Big Ten coaches don't care about making millions? Sure JoePa could a lot more then $500K salary but he's plenty comfortable so why not let the school use the money for other things? Carr's just the same. I've seen his house and while very nice it's nothing extravagant. Sometimes coaching is about more then being at the top of the salary list.

This is all very crazy. No one wants to take things at face value. For all of the scuttlebutt about Miles' imminent departure, there was an equal amount saying that he was gonna stay. O'Keefe, who sometimes seems like a dullard, has stated publicly that Miles told him that he did not want to leave LSU and Miles has many good reasons to stay. O'Keefe and others have stated publicly on multiple occasions that they were gonna do everything they could to keep Miles. Now we learn that on Friday a tentative agreement was reached. Miles was probably leaning toward staying till ESPN forced his hand. That is what happened and in the end it was best for everyone. Miles will be the LSU coach next year (as he has publicly stated).

Michigan better pick their guy and then offer whatever it takes to get him here.

It's hard to pick a coach when you don't even freaking contact them. What exactly is Martin doing to find a new coach? Praying that one will just show up?

I think Miles got fed up with all of the speculation and the media hounding him about his decision. I honestly think that he wanted to go to Michigan and probably would have taken the deal if Herbie wouldn't have leaked his info onto ESPN (it is his right, but still a low blow). Probably just said "Well f' it. They want an answer, I'm staying at LSU." He has emotional ties to his players and to this school and even to the town. People forget that his kids have been going to school here for 3 years and transplanting them again wouldn't be easy.
