You think it's a suprise? You who follow recruiting and had seen/heard countless times through White himself, coaches and scouts about him likely playing LB?
Apparently you didnt follow his recruitment very close. It was only set in stone he was playing LB after he already stepped foot on campus and it was "Big news" that he was getting moved over to LB because of the logjam at RB. He said throughout the recruiting process he felt he was a RB and wanted to play that, but at times would merely mention "I'm open to LB".

Why in the world would he not be in the mix?
In the mix to START, not just get reps. Yes, it should come as a surprise to anyone a true freshman will likely start at LB on a new defense. When's the last time we ever had a true freshman start at LB?

Are you serious?
Are they not upper classmen? What's your point here? Riley and Thompson are seniors, albeit Thompson just got moved to LB himself. Alexander and Voorhies are juniors. I think it's always impressive when a freshman can come in and bump off not 1 but several upper classmen who could be competing for the same spot. I thought for sure Riley would start opposite of Beckwith this season considering the time he's put in and he's always looked capable.

Sometimes LSU fans hype the South La. recruits and disregard the N. La. guys, who get less press. White was also from a small town and not Shreveport or Monroe.
Talent was never an issue and speed, in particular was always impressive.
So, now that he his doing what many thought he could do, let's not overhype him and talk about multiple Heisman trophies like we usually do with our most impressive freshman.
Leonard Fournette was the only recruit we've had worthy of that type of talk.
Looks like he will be a very talented, inexperienced freshman who will get lots of PT.

I upvoted and downvoted you. I kinda like what you said, but not how you said it.
I also think it may be a bit of a surprise that he is getting more buzz than Divinity right now.
But I do agree that the upperclassmen that these guys are competing against have not shown many flashes, even on special teams.

Don't be surprised if he doesn't play that much. Usually spring surprises don't play that much in the fall. Miles might be sending a message to the veterans.

Him being a stud isn't that much of a surprise. Once we learned he would be playing LB, this was kind of expected IMO. The guy was a highly touted recruit and as many have said probably would've been an even higher star guy if he would have committed to LB in recruiting process.

There is literally not one upperclassman that can step in and play inside with Beckwith
From what I have seen anyway

He's fairly stout, like 6'0 230, and has played plenty in the last 2 seasons as a backup (44 tackles).

Those who follow S. La. players and hyped Divinity so much may be surprised. Saban apparently really wanted him.
Divinity is very good, but based on raw talent, that White is more of a standout at this point doesn't surprise whose who followed both.
Here's a question some may legitimately raise with White: will he stay clean, focused and not take plays off?

not that it means much because it was a spring scrimmage. But Les said he had the most tackles.

quote:None of those guys (i.e. Alexander, Riley, Voorhies) are big enough. They're all around 215 lbs. How are they going to play the middle and not get pushed around? That's why Bama is so good - their guys do not get run over by linemen. That's been our biggest problem against the running teams like Bama and Arky. With D. White, first time we've had two big MLB's that can play in a while.

Ali Highsmith started 2 games in 2004.

I don't get the Riley proponents here.
Maybe I've missed something, but has he shown the ability to be an SEC starter for a championship quality defense?

6'1" and a ripped 255. Just a true freshman. That's terrifying. I still looked like a skinny kid at 18.
