I apologize if this thread is redundant, I never post on this board. Did a generic search and saw a 28 page fly fishing thread from last year.

I'm thinking of making a 2-3 day fly fishing trip this year out west, probably sometime in the summer. Do any of you have any recommendations based on experience? I'm thinking Bozeman MT or Snake River in Idaho, something along those lines. Not opposed to something a little more accessible either (ex: Provo River). Would like to do it guided, so any advice there would also be appreciated.

My only experience fly fishing out west was in Colorado. Fished the South Platte near Deckers several years ago when I was in Denver with family for a couple weeks.

I have been a big Snake River guy for a while, but I cannot recommend the Missouri River outside of Helena enough. The browns in the Missouri make the trout in the Snake look like minnows. Check out a guy named Trevor Madden in Wolf Creek, MT. I went with him last August and he put me on some bruiser Brown Trout, with a few rainbows mixed in.

Snake is fun and Scenic, but is fished hard and often by a lot of tourists and the fish get real smart.

How much do you want to spend? Fishing out west can be big $$$$ during the summer. Especially if you don't want to be fishing with every DIY or guided angler within 1,000 miles. Those fish are smart.

One of my good buddies is in town this week, actully driving my car around. He guides around Bozeman and will put you on the fish and show you a good time.

The Flathead near Kalispell is a good location, it's right outside of Glacier.

Sawtooth mountain range, ID. The Salmon River flows through the little town of Stanley. It looks and feels like you imagine fly fishing out west is. While I was there last, Elk were migrating through town.

I've fished the Middle fork of the Flathead out of Whitefish/Kalispell.

Had an awesome trip and absolutely loved it. Would highly recommend.

I had a guide that I booked with the flyshop in Whitefish. It was a day trip in a drift boat.

Did an awesome DIY trip out of Bozeman this summer. Fished the Lower Madison for 2 days and then the Upper for 2 days on our way to Yellowstone. We caught fish, and there was plenty to do around town. Unfortunately we missed the salmonfly hatch by less than a week.

I have fly fished for several years out west, Colorado, Montana and Wyoming. Hands down the best and most enjoyable trip was down the Gunnison river as it flows through the Black Canyon. Rafting trip for three days and two nights in July during the Salmon Fly hatch. Rigs Fly shop in Ouray Colorado was the outfitter and Ouray is great in the summer to spend time before and after the trip.

depends really on what kind of fishing you like...do you like big water trout that you would access by drifting a boat or would you rather something like hiking high mountain passes to fish snowmelt streams and beaver ponds?...

This is more of what i have in mind. Most of my trout fishing experience has been in the Appalachians so more hiking, roll casting beneath trees, and catching really small trout. It's still a blast but i want the bigger and more open experience out west.

Closest I've come to that was a 2 day guided trip at the White River in Bull Shoals AR.

you can't go wrong in MT guiding in MT is no joke you can't just buy a boat and start guiding. fish out of Bozeman plenty of food and drinks, it is a fun town as long as you are not from Cali

I spend every summer in MT and have fished most of the major rivers. The Missouri near Craig is day in day out the best fly fishing in the state (many would say in the US) because it's below the Hauser dam so very consistent water flow. But it's mostly nymphing which some purists don't like. Dry flies on the Mo requires more skill but the fish are just yuge. Other rivers vary with the season and can be great at times but nothing matches the Mo. September and October are best months and less crowded but certainly good fishing in other months as well.

As several others have already said, drifting the Missouri near Craig, MT will get you on some big fish. Also, fishing the Henry's Fork in Last Chance, ID is an awesome experience. That place is loaded with unbelievable guides and you're only 45 minutes away from Yellowstone. I'm jelly...

I hear the summer time Tarpon fishing is pretty good in Florida. I've also heard that summer time bull red fishing in Louisiana is world class, but that's just hearsay.
