Big time programs that have hired assistant coaches...

LSU fans are probably still gun shy about hiring a coordinator to take over the program due to how the Mike Archer era ended. What major schools have hired/promoted coaches without head coaching experience and how did they fare?
Coaches that have done well:
Bob Stoops at Oklahoma
Mark Richt at Georgia
Lloyd Carr at Michigan
Rich Rodriguez at West Virginia
Mike Leach at Texas Tech
And not so well:
Ron Zook at Florida
Mike Archer at LSU
Mike Shula at Alabama
Larry Coker at Miami did well, then fizzled.
Who else? I guess I am hoping to make the point that we shouldn't eliminate coordinators from the potential candidate pool because of what happened with Archer.

Fulmer was hired from within. 1 NC
Carr was hired from within. 1 NC
Croom was an asst in Green Bay and is turning MSU around.
Wasn't BC's coach an asst before this year?
Petrino was an asst before Louisville.
Arnsparger was an asst before coming here.

With this said; who is out there now to consider? Tenuta was getting a lot of mention last year at this time; now he's unemployed.
Could you add Mike Stoops to the list -- wasn't he OU coordinator now Zona coach. I'd say jury still out there.

UCLA, NC State and Ole Miss aren't major schools? Maybe not the last 2 (big maybe), but UCLA?
Mangino's gotten KU to a few bowls before now, that's doing well in my book. It's KU.

Actually he still has a job as interim HC with a shot at being permanent.

Different situation. I haven't taken the time to look uo every record but each one of those assistants that has succeded took over a program that was losing at the time.
It's a lot to ask of an asst. to come into a program that wins 10 games every year and continue that success.
That being said, I think Muschamps going to be a hell of a coach. Somewhere..........

I thought he had no HC exp. either, but he'd actually coached at some smaller schools before WV.
