UCLA, NC State and Ole Miss aren't major schools? Maybe not the last 2 (big maybe), but UCLA?
I had taken UCLA out my quote before you posted...certainly a major school, but I would say that the jury is still out on him as a coach there.

but who are some assistants out there (other than ours and muschamp) who would be up for it?

It's a lot to ask of an asst. to come into a program that wins 10 games every year and continue that success.

That's the key thing to note. About the only coach on the list that didn't go into a losing program was Richt, and UGA was only a 7-8 win type program at best when he took over. If we were to go and get an asst with no HC, he'd have to be use to the expectations and environment of a program at this level. All I can think of is Jimbo and Strong, and neither seem likely.

I thought he had no HC exp. either, but he'd actually coached at some smaller schools before WV.
1988 Salem
1990-96 Glenville State

I will still include him since those are really small programs and he was an assistant right before getting the WVU gig.

True, Lester, but how many times did those coaches first become head coach at a smaller school, or one that wasn't a traditional power?

You are both a gentleman and a scholar.

I don't consider these guys to be at major schools, or traditional powers...

Texas Tech and West VA are traditional powers though?

maybe...WV has been respectable under RR and is about to get into the BCS Championship game...Tech is close...always beating either OU and Texas every other year...both aren't traditional powers but they hang with the big guys...both aren't small schools/bottom feeders in their conference.

Nick Saban was basically a career assistant when he was hired at Michigan ST.

and our own Les Miles was a career ASST before landing OSU

Lester, can I assume that you are not opposed to a coordinator being hired?

Ok, can you think of any other OC or DC that can be added to the potential candidate list?

No. He had been the HC at Toledo for at least one season.
