When I'm in the rubicon, I get zero thumbs up from kids. When I was in my old 4x4, every car that passed had kids' faces pressed against the glasses staring at the vehicle.

If given the choice between all of the american 4x4s, I'd go with an international scout.

Performancewise, the jap stuff is hard to beat.

well said. Jeeps are for nerds. Look at the people driving them. Seriously.

That's pretty much what I had figured. I'm not really concerned with the bad mpg as it wont be a daily driver, just a big boy toy. I'm mechanically inclined for minor stuff, but anything major will require a shop. I'm really in love with the CJ style, but not opposed to the newer ones also. This would be a second vehicle and just used for fun. Are there certain years/models I should stay away from?

I wouldn't mind having a Bronco either, but the jeep just keeps calling my name.

Well you are already a 4X4 Demon. The jeep would help your campaign. I say go for it.

Chuck Norris' take on it:

I think we'd all want an old bronco. But for $20k less, a jeep is an acceptable alternative.

Buy an FJ-40 Land Cruiser instead. Jeeps are junk and Land Cruisers are built better and way stronger than jeeps, and it's not even close. No one talks about Land Cruisers being pieces of shite. Millions of people will tell you jeeps are pieces of shite.

Not to be vain or anything, but I don't like the way it looks. I'm sure it is a tank, but I don't want it to look like crap either.

Best advice here is the Gogo: instant orange.

If you aren't afraid to work on it and tinker then do it. It's a blast and addicting. Watching a locked CJ climb a tree without blinking is an awesome feeling if you built the rig yourself and if you didn't.

Depends if you like the cj5 or cj7.

5 is a shorter wheelbase so if you have anyone in the back its cramped. A Cj7 with a 360 is a beast......

I always wanted one growing up. Got a '91 YJ when I was 15, and had to sell it when I was 19. It was junk, but I think most of that was the previous owner had never heard of this thing called an oil change. It was low mileage, so we thought it would be great for a long while. Apparently he had owned it for 6 years and never did any maintenance on it.

I got another one about 4 years ago. An '04 TJ and it was pretty much a 3rd vehicle for the two families that owned it before I did. The guy I bought it from said the folks he bought it from pulled it behind an RV on trips. He had a work truck and just bought it for a toy, but didn't drive it as much as he thought he would. Plus his son was 11 or 12 and he was going to buy a pair of 4 wheelers so they could ride. The son was a little disappointed when I picked it up from them, but the dad said that would all change when he brought the 4-wheelers home for his birthday to surprise him.

Now my 8 year old daughter is talking about wanting the Jeep when she is old enough. I'm sure it will still be running fine. I may let her drive it a few years in high school and get a CJ or something for me. Then I'll get her something else in college and let my son drive it when he's old enough.

You must be talking about the US market. I'm talking about what I hear from people all over the world. Tons of Land Cruisers on this planet.

FJ-40's are also great investments. I've never sold one that I didn't double my money on. One of the ones I have now is worth easily $35k more than I paid for it less than 10 years ago. That's triple what I paid for it and I've put zero money into it, other that maintenance.

You could buy a new jeep for the price of a decent fj-40

TJ sounds like your best option

Auto or manual?

I guess if you give a damn what people think about you THAT much... sure, go be unique and get something else. But since this thread was about JEEPS... my guess is that you have more sack than that.

I had a kid 3 weeks ago LITERALLY giving me thumbs up and smiling while he was talking to whoever was driving. I have also had 3 or so diff women react... also other Jeepers notice. So, this claim is plain false. If you drive the jeep and don't think about it, you will notice it happening. SURE you can get something else that is more unique and draw more attention to you IF that's your thing. I personally wouldn't give a rats arse if people gave attention to me or not. I would love my Jeep regardless, because it's cool and it's tough.

OFF road, out of the box and fresh off the lot, there's really nothing that's going to go toe to toe with a Jeep. Aftermarket is aftermarket. You spend a ton, you can make your Jeep or anything else super capable.

A lot of purists say go manual... but the auto doesn't run into issues when it shifts buried in water/mud. AND you can put the auto into manual mode so you can stay in a lower gear when going over stuff.

In my best opinion... if you've always wanted a Jeep, then you will always want one until you get one. There's some other really cool stuff out there tho. I love the high end 4 runners. \m/ And I highly recommend the 2005 and newer offroad model Xterras.
