Who voted for this guy, that's what terrifies me. I graduated from LSU twice, first year TOPS recipient...I moved away from LA for the Brain drain, got a 3rd degree, I now make good money.
My wife is begging to move back to LA to be close to family with our young kids. But why? To make 40k+ less and pay more in taxes, where is the incentive? This governor is a joke, I'm ashamed of LA politics, always have been, but this is the worst... closest we will get is Texas now

Absolutely, but that doesn't fit the narrative that this is all because of the Democrat in office
Nobody is saying that. This is squarely on Jindal and his failure of a governorship and not doing enough to fix the state constitution and enact real conservative reforms.
The problem is that JBE is responding to it in the worst way possible and making it fricking worse nothing but taxes and more taxes without cuts. Hell, he did that already on his first day in office with medicaid expansion and that will frick us up the arse hard.
Hopefully JBE's failure as a governor will finally start the momentum for a convention to rewrite the state constitution and get rid of the protected spending.

Not really.
Vitter had very good budget plans and had the most fleshed out issues section any candidate there was. He knew what he was talking about. He would've been a good governor for this state despite how icky people may feel for him liking pussy too much.
JBE is a lightweight and in over his head as a country bumpkin back bencher minority state legislator from bumfrick, la.

I can't believe how little people know about what's coming with this Medicaid expansion-- many think it's not that big a deal.
It's been very bad for most of the other states, but it is going to bend us the frick over.
JBE pretty much gave a big frick you to all the "conservatives" that he duped into voting for him in his first week in office. We're in a major financial crisis and his first 3 moves are to accept more Medicaid we'll never be able to pay for, extend the no- work requirements for food stamp which could've saved money, and then gave raises to his staff after claiming he wouldn't.
Then, adding insult to injury, tried to claim he didn't know about how dire the budget while he was campaigning on no taxes... even though he was in state legislature
to the people who voted for this lyin arse piece of dog shite

As I sit here looking back at my home from Dallas, TX I cannot feel anything but sadness this morning. So many friends I know used TOPS to get themselves out of poverty and into a job and role the felt respected with. You start taking away opportunities to move up in class and not only will this state lose out with enhanced brain drain, but also the white collar, high paying , corporations that come with the highly educated work force.
I was considering moving back home to New Orleans at some point in the future, but that dream is long gone now. I'll gladly pay 81 bucks to fly in on a weekend to NOLA to ensure that I stay in Texas so that my family gets to live in a state where you actually have a fighting chance to move up in.
I'm an Electrical Engineer, graduated from the UT system. Graduate of West Jefferson High School 2004.
Sad day today :( .

It wasn't just a frick You to Conservatives: It was a frick You to anyone who pays taxes in this state. Should I say, what few producers are left to pay the taxes in the state.
Good work, Grubers.

One thing I wonder is how much (if any) has TOPS caused the increase in tuition, fees, etc over the last 15-20 years.
From a supply and demand point of view, TOPS should increase the demand for college, since it gives more individuals the means to attend. An increase in demand leads to an increase in price.
Also higher Ed officials know they will receive a lot of their tuition payments from TOPS (guaranteed money until now) so why not increase tuition?

Vitter wasn't running against Jindal so I'm not sure what your point is.
Vitter vs JBE is the only thing to argue about since those were the choices. Talking about Jindal (or any outgoing official) in an election is silly since you cannot undo the past and you need to look at what your choices are moving forward.
See the way people were tricked into electing Obama after Bush.
Many voters in 2008 literally thought Obama was running against Bush. Sad.

I want to go back and bump all the money board threads with people saying they didn't need to save for their kids college because of TOPS

Actually it's probably a good thing if it lasts. It'll stop all the worthless fricks who go try out college for a year because Tops pays for it and end up dropping out.
The fact that you qualify for tops with a C average in high school is laughable.

When TOPS started, the legislature controlled tuition and raises in tuition were slow.
Then the retards voted to allow the universities to raise it, I think up to 10% a year if needed.
Surprisingly, the annuall tuition hikes became needed and outpaced TOPS actuarily derived self-funding plans.
The legislature hit the TOPS self-destruction button years ago.

When I was 17 the drinking age switched to 21. When I turned 18 I found out nearly every kid that I went to school with got to go for free for no reason other than they were a year younger than me. I lived. These kids will find a way and people that work hard will still be successful.
I am a year older than you. I was even able to buy booze briefly before the drinking age changed in 95.
I worked and borrowed my way thru college while living in shitty apartments. Despite paying my own way for school, my tax dollars have been funding mediocre students in the state to go to college for 18 years while I still payoff my own student loans. That is a 2 decade kick in the dick to me. I do think it's shitty that this was dropped on students at the last minute but everyone paying attention saw this coming a mile away. TOPS simply isn't sustainable in this economy.

For many of us, the incentive is the family your wife wants to be near. My wife and I would also make significantly more money out of state but we choose to be near our families.

So you convince the whole family to move away

It's not like there is scholarship money for every single minority college student. Plenty of people of all colors can't afford college without TOPS.
And you're missing my point. It is much easier to obtain a scholarship/financial aid if you're in a minority in this state, period. Last time I checked there are no strictly Caucasian scholarships available.
I still don't understand why they would cut the program altogether rather than just adjust the requirements for receiving aid.

My only hope with the TOPS ordeal is that people begin to understand what is a right and what is a luxury. Same thing that happened in housing has happened in higher education.
Not everyone should own a home.
Not everyone should go to college, especially on the state's dime.
Rent. Be a plumber or an electrician or a home builder. There are ways to get by in this world without everything being given to you.

So the TOPS incentive didn't keep you in state liked they claimed it would. Louisiana spending TOPS on you was a waste of taxpayer money.
Posted on 2/12/16 at 9:08 am to slackster
very well stated.
I'm a republican voter with 2 kids, one a junior in HS. If he wants to go to college i do not expect the tax payers to foot his bill.
frick anyone who is pissed at this. Greedy bastards.
But i think the main reason people are pissed is because he cut TOPS all the while the blacks will still be lined up outside of many seafood establishments buying boiled crawfish on the taxpayers dime with their Louisiana Purchase cards.

Hahaha I did actually. I wasn't a born Texan :P. I worked 45 hour work weeks at the local Best Buy and did 18 hour semesters for 4.5 years.
Working that much was needed because loans didn't cover all of life bull ish thrown at the normal human being jackass.
You do realize that Stafford loans are NOT blank checks?
