If we just lose Anderson and Gordon, what cap space would we have?

By not trading those guys and just freeing up space, what would we have? Enough to try to sign Harrison Barnes?

If I remember correctly, not a whole lot.

Assuming Cole is only here to drive the tank and they don't actually like him, losing Gordon/Ryno/Cole and Gee opting out gives you about $19 million in cap space. But, that's not taking draft pick salary into account, which will probably be in the $3 million range unless we get top 3 where it will be $4-$4.5. So we'd really only have $14.5-$16 million and we'd need to replace Ryno/Gordon/Cole/Gee. Maybe you can get Illyasova or Frye for free or a 2nd to replace Ryno, use BDJ on a near minimum deal as Gordon's replacement and use the remaining $5ish plus the $2.7 million room exception for a backup PG and wing. A Mo Williams type to replace Cole and let's face it a Gee type to replace Gee. Also, if AD doesn't make an All NBA team and qualify for the Rose Rule that gives you another $3 million or so to play with.
I haven't seen a figure for what the max will be, but it's usually about $1 million less than 25% of the cap, so you're looking at $21-$22 million to max out Barnes if that's what it takes to scare GS off. The Pels would need to either dump Asik or Tyreke or Ajinca and Dante to go after someone like Barnes or Batum.

For a team that has made poor personnel moves by acquiring guys like Posey and Ariza I'd think the fanbase would be more hesitant about throwing big money at a 3 and D / 4th offensive option from a title team.

Posey was under a different regime
Ariza wasn't amazing but he contributed a lot more than Posey ever did. I wouldn't call that a bad move.

Yeah, I don't want to give Barnes $20 mil at all, I was thinking he may be able to go for $12m or so. I guess I'm undervaluing with the new cap.

I don't think you can compare Barnes to Posey at all. Actually think that's a pretty stupid comparison.
I don't want to max him out, but I'm just thinking about signing a guy to be the 3rd scoring option and playing defense.

Ariza wasn't as good as people expected him to be. Obviously posey wasn't either.
It doesn't matter who the regime was I'm saying be wary of the guy with a limited role on a great team. Barnes is not a special player IMO and him being ok golden state makes him look like a better player than he would be on another team. Like Ariza on the lakers or posey w the celts.

There's also always a chance he could break out as a more featured piece.
I really want batum if we are dead set on spending on a wing.

I understand where you're coming from with a non star 3 and D wing not being worth the max, but with the pieces we have I think a smart 2 way wing could be. Adding a legit 2 way wing with QPon coming back to play SG makes Asik viable for enough minutes that he becomes worth his contract instead of an albatross. I'd be a lot more confident maxing out Batum than Barnes, but it'd be worth every penny of Tyreke and Gordon's salary slot to get a SF that makes the rest of the roster click.

Someone is going to max out Barnes. It's inevitable.

Unfortunately for us, Ariza's worst years of his career were the two he spent in NOLA. His best 2 years were the years after he left us and went to washington. He fell off a bit now that he's back in Houston, but still greatly outperforming his Hornets tenure.

I know Nate Duncan mentioned that we would have around 20 million in free cap space.

Who is going to throw 20 at Batum? The Pels probably will, but do we have a list of teams we will be bidding against? Would like to know the competition...

Sort of like Morey throwing 5/$33 at Ariza coming off a Lakers championship.
You know, there's only one gm in the league that has signed Ariza twice to a combined 9/$65....

Yea that first deal wasn't one of DMs best moves, the second time around it was a very good deal. My post wasn't about the decision making of the GMs as much as it is for the FANbase to be excited about a player who is probably overvalued because he is on a loaded team.

Definitely agree.
2nd deal was good for him and you got a 1st out of dumping Asik.

AFter 23,000 posts, you finally made a decent one. I tend to agree with you here that Barnes isn't a special player and I would be hesitant to throw that kind of money at him.
The Posey comparison doesn't work though. Barnes is a young player not even in his prime yet. Posey was exiting his.
