The Fine Brothers have made their name with all the React videos: Kids React, Teens React, Elders React, Youtubers React, etc.

Friday they tried to trademark the word React disguised as "licensing" their react videos so that if someone else does it, they receive the revenue. They received a ton of blacklash (including losing a million subscribers)

It's a pretty big deal because it could shape the future of youtube content.

UPDATE: They have apologized and released a statement, retracting all trademarks, releasing videos they tried to pull, and discontinued the "React World" program

They had another attorney chime in that did a really good job explaining it and he said that there are already enough react videos on Youtube prior to the Fine Bros that "react" has now entered public domain and it would be hard to trademark it. About the only thing they can maybe do is trademark an exact video format but he said that format would have to be down to the seconds of a video such as 10 second intro, 30 seconds of this, etc to be able to defend it.

The way it was presented made them seem horrible but there is nothing wrong with them protecting their show format

They didn't invent that format and a copyright attorney said there is no way to really copyright a format without it being very, very specific. If you read what's going on, they are already claiming other videos and taking revenue from people that they feel is too close to theirs. They claimed "seniors react" videos made before they started their series. Trademarking "react" is a way for them to claim more. It is being done out of greed and not simply to protect a format.

The format is very very specific. I don't know if you can copyright ____________s react as a name but I don't blame them for trying. There are videos where the entire format word for word beat for beat has been copied. To be honest its really the perfect way to do it so even if you aren't trying to rip them off once you have seen their show that is really the only way you can do it.

I disagree. They are getting tons of backlash and losing subscribers by the droves.

Not really. It's people watching a show and answering questions. That has been around forever and by specific, according to the copyright attorney I posted, it would have to be down to the second.

How can you trademark someone reacting to watching videos? That makes no sense at all
