Someone explain the appeal of Mardi Gras to me

There are certain things I like about it -- the general excitement of the season and king cake, in particular.
But the actual parades? It's just a bunch of people riding on floats and throwing shite that would be considered Party City junk any other time of the year.
I understand it being a fun thing to do once, but I don't understand the people that look forward to it year after year. The crowds, the traffic, the junk that people work so hard to catch, the floats that are all pretty similar year to year...I just don't get it.
I am genuinely curious to hear real answers from the die hards.
This will not be my most popular thread.

Are you from south Louisiana?
If not...you just might not get it.

I get it, I just don't get into it

An excuse for the town's trashy people to assert their trashiness on society for 4 to 5 days out of the year?

Do you enjoy tailgating? Because it's pretty much 2 weeks of tailgating

To each their own. You might like some of it. You might like none of it.

I'm with you. I've never understood the appeal. And the wastefulness of buying a bunch of plastic garbage to throw to people who pretend it's valuable is mind-boggling.

I agree about the parades. I like King cakes and the days off work.

Good excuse to get hammered and infect others with your own particular brand of frick-with.

This thread will turn into a North & South Louisiana pissing match before long.
Sorry you don't like fun, OP.

Had a great 4 days at Mardis Gras in 1986, don't believe I saw one parade.

It's a period where a section of society collectively takes a break from the mundane, putting everything on the back burner to enjoy life and the people around them. Some people do it in different ways, but it's a welcome departure from the everyday, whichever way you enjoy the period.

Mardi Gras day in the quarter/marigny is the best day of the year in New Orleans.

We cling onto the traditions of the past because it makes us feel special and cultured. Besides, it gives us something to do.

I'm from NOLA and I loved it when I was younger. Since I've moved away, I really haven't missed it like I thought that I might.
When I plan return home trips, I find myself targeting things like Jazzfest or French Quarter Fest instead.

Family and friends.
And debauchery.

Spending time with family and friends eating and drinking on the side of the road. Listening to the high school bands.
It's free entertainment.
And if you have kids, they enjoy catching beads and seeing the floats.
