I used to really enjoy Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Now that I am older 42 I and remain in Lafayette for Mardi Gras it has become a burden more than a happy time. Here is some of the problems - people blocking off public land. People fighting because he roped off a section at 5am and now thinks he owns said land. -parking , people roping off the city owned easement, will fight you for parking on the 3 foot of their land that the city owns. - people not watching their kids, the kids that act like crack addicts for a spear or stuffed animal - the grown up that will run over a 6 year old girl for a bead. If this didn't happen and everyone drank, ate, and were civilized, Mardi Gras would be awesome.

I always had a good time going to parades when I lived in New Orleans. My favorite day was Samedi Gras. I would walk to Lee Circle for Iris and Tucks. Then I would tailgate with my friends and wait for Endymion.

The first weekend is really a more enjoyable experience if you have kids.

Parked at Cohen, clean bathroom was included with parking.

Crowds were only one to two people deep, so I could step back and watch the kids without feeling like someone would trample my kids.

I honestly think the kids had more fun between parades.

It's part of who we are down here.

You either understand that or you don't.

let me just say that this makes no sense and seems like an admission that you can't answer the question

I don't get why people lose their minds over dry bread with gloppy filling, gritty sugar topping, and a choking hazard hidden somewhere inside. We have great food down here. King cake, IMO, is not our finest. But, as I said, to each his own.

You seem very touchy about my dislike of mediocre pastries.

The kids aren't old enough to know that.

I agree. KIng Cakes are overrated, but I admittedly don't have much of a sweet tooth.

*sigh* Mardi Gras. I don't know what happened. I loved in my college days and early 20's. It was debauchery and craziness abound. Now that I am near 30, I find myself cringing at the thought of doing Mardi Gras in NOLA. it's like I don't know how to do it casually. It's either don't go or go full throttle and redline.

The beads are nonsense for an adult. i couldn't care less. I understand the appeal for kids. I do enjoy seeing the dancers and the bands. The float designs are pretty cool too. I do much better standing off to the side and observing.

You seem to have a hard on about people explaining the appeal of Mardi Gras.

I am from Michigan. Moved here in 1979. I thought it was just unreal at first because they don't party like that in Michigan. Again I was also 19 at the time and had a culture shock with the difference in people and lifestyles between both states... But as the years went by I have lost interest in the idea of going to a parade and having the ability to drink in public and watching people get stupid drunk and think its ok... I am not against it at all... But I just don't participate like I used to...........

What I don't like is the greed .... people begging for a cheap bead. Then, when they get a cheap bead and realize what it is they aren't satisfied....they want a better throw.

I enjoyed the parade last night with my kids. But, I'm with you. If I were a single adult in my 30s with no kids, I wouldn't bother. Unless maybe if I weren't from here, and it was something I had never experienced. Or if I were riding. That seems like a good time. But, just going to the parades year after year holds no appeal for me.

It is about community, being excited by the little things in life, not talking yourself too seriously, and celebrating in a way that has been done for years in the past.

Why do we celebrate Halloween, Thanksgiving or even St Patrick's Day? A lot of the same reasons.

It's fun once. Don't see the point of going every year to collect junk. Especially in Nola, drunk idiots, crowds of people, just no point, its worst than Buku or the hippie music fests they have
