any examples to draw from. I am sure there are examples but can't think of anyone that was in the NFL for 30 years and went to college for the first time.

Schotenheimer was UGAs OC last season.

Thanks. Well, that wasn't a smashing success. Of course, the qb situation there wasn't his fault.
I know he had one recruiting cycle but how did he do in that regard?

Dave Wannstedt was an NFL guy. Not 30 years, but he was in the pros from 1989-2004 before taking the Pitt job in '05.

Charlie Weis comes to mind, not as long of a time as you're looking for though. He spent time (3 years) at South Carolina but was in the NFL for 14 years. Definitely not a success by any means

Jim Mora Jr. Really long time with Atlanta and Seattle. Was never a college coach before UCLA and I think the last time he'd even been a college assistant was in the 80's or early 90's.

Pretty decent. Kept Jacob Eason committed. He's a pretty personable guy.

Does Pete Carroll to USC count?

Not sure TBH. Spent 10 years in college then 15 in the NFL. 10 or so years of those 15 were position coach or coordinator. With 40% of his career (up to the point he went to USC) being college I say no.
Mora is the best I can think of. He had a year as a GA in college before going to UCLA.

Jim Mora Jr. Also Monte Kiffin was a NFL coach for 25 years before he joined his son Lane's staff at Tennessee.

Well, I am getting the impression that Oregon might be announcing Mike Nolan as the DC today if all goes well. It will be interesting to see how he does on the trail, if it's him.

A lot of those names coached in college early in their careers. Nolan has been in the NFL for 30 years.
