Progress!!

The Quality Deer Management Association has just released their annual Whitetail Report and this 2016 edition is headlined by a pretty huge announcement. For the first time in recorded deer management history, more mature bucks (3.5 years old+) were killed than 1.5 year olds!
quote:
U.S. whitetail hunters are taking more mature bucks than 1½-year-old or “yearling” bucks for the first time in modern history, according to data compiled by the Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) for its 2016 Whitetail Report, now available online.
In the 2014-15 hunting season, the most recent season with complete deer harvest data available from every whitetail state, the percentage of yearling bucks in the national buck harvest dropped to a new record low of 33 percent, falling below the harvest rate for 3½-year-old and older bucks – 34 percent – for the first time since whitetail populations were restored in the mid-1900s.
Progress!!

Surprisingly:
Now, this is only the information that was reported. But I'd still say we're on the right track
quote:
Of the 26 whitetail states that collect age data on older bucks, the top state in harvest of mature bucks for the 2014-15 season was Mississippi, where 74 percent of bucks killed were 3½ years old or older. Rounding out the Top-5 were Arkansas and Louisiana at 67 percent, Texas at 62 percent, and Oklahoma at 60 percent.
Now, this is only the information that was reported. But I'd still say we're on the right track

I don't believe that at all.

Me neither. When I call in my deer, they never ask the age.

LA being top 5 shocks me
We probably have one of the poorest harvest reporting methods/systems out of the 26 states so it shouldn't be surprising.

The catch is the unreported deer.

I'll add to that number next year. Let way to many 3.5 year olds walk this year only to have them shot by others, mostly by illegal means. I can't bring myself to it brown its down but tired of letting 135+ inch deer walk hoping they survive to 150.

Yep, or misreported. Our club president messes up on the ARs and calls the little bucks in as "does". Others woods-gut them and report them as buttons or don't report them at all.
In general, none of the legal deer we shoot in Arkansas are 1.5 year olds.

There is no way they know this in Louisiana.
The tags only differentiate "antlered" and "antlerless", and that's ALL that's reported, unless it is club reporting. I know some have to turn in weight and points to landowners, and some may be required to age with jawbones. The number of actual deer kills is probably at least 200% of what is reported, maybe more when considering the amount of dishonest hunters in our state.
All they ever know I killed is either a buck or doe. I'm sure this is just another marketing strategy by QDMA much like DU and Delta Waterfowl feed the public.

This would be cool. However, they have no clue what is actually killed in LA.

Definitely progress!
However, the people/leases that report to QDMA are the people/leases that are trying to grow larger deer. As stated previously, the unreported deer are the problem.
However, it is progress (and surprising) that this is the first time the mature deer have outnumbered the 1.5 year olds

Deer Tagging Information
Prior to hunting deer, all deer hunters, regardless of age or license status, must obtain deer tags and have in possession when hunting deer. Immediately upon harvesting a deer, the hunter must tag the deer with the appropriate carcass tag before it is moved from the kill site, and the hunter must document the kill on the harvest report card portion of the deer tag license.
The hunter must record the date of kill and the parish of kill on the carcass tag. The tag must remain attached to the deer while kept at camp, or while it is transported to the domicile of the hunter or to a cold storage facility. Hunters who keep the carcass or meat at camp must also comply with the game possession tag regulations. Within 7 days the hunter must validate the kill using the toll free validation phone number 866-484-4805 or the web link: www.la.wildlifelicense.com.
Hunters harvesting deer on DMAP lands should follow the instructions provided to them by LDWF. When deer check stations are in operation, hunters on WMAs can validate deer during mandatory deer check hunts.

Yeah, that isn't followed by many.
