Also Thorpe played for Carlisle 1907-1908 and then again from 1911-1912. This is after he went to Haskell Indian Nations University before 1904 and then first went to Carlisle in 1904.

I have a rating system that doesn't account for margin of victory (I hold it to be a self-evident truth that margin of victory will not be counted, and I will not argue for or against it ), so there's a little stat/bias there. I wish I could go back in time and organize some more north/south games back then; maybe I'd be surprised at some of the results.
you're discounting the dominance of LSU that year.

How did teams travel to away games way back then? Horse and buggy? Anyone know?

I'm pretty sure most travel was done by train.

Oh. Of course.

A review shows that some organization awarded an NC to LSU in:
1908 (same organization "split" the award with Penn)
1935 (same organization "split" the award with TCU)
1936
1958
Minn is the recognized champion in 35 and 36 but did not win the Big Ten in 36 and was co-champ in 35

Teams traveled by train, and they scheduled all the games they could to fill out a trip.
Say Georgia comes to Louisiana, it would play Tulane and LSU, one on one day and the next the next day.
LSU played many games in NO back those days.

Really interesting how all of this has changed so much.

As far as players playing baseball for money, I read A biography of Jim Thorpe about 45 years ago and this fact was well discussed as an "excuse". Many spent years after the fact trying to get his Olympic metals back that he was stripped of due to him being a professional.

That kind of stuff, while historically sort of neat, is really silly to try to "claim" in this day and age.

You bumped this because you read a biography about Jim Thorpe?

I think we have a legit claim to 7 titles.
I agree however to only officially claim the '58 and '03.
So Ohio State is the 07 Champion?

There is no doubt Jim was a professional...
he played pro ball in North Carolina for 2 years (1909-10) and while at Carlisle in 1907 and 08 he was paid money to play football.
All of Pop's Indian teams were paid until the end of the 1909 season.
The pay for football was $10.50 a week, but Pop also allowed credit lines at local stores; so a player like Thorpe could make much more than the near $500 a season he got in North Carolina.
BTW that near $500 Thorpe made comes out to near $30 a week, which is well over expense money.
Heisman paid players to come in and play agianst his team and was said, but never proved he paid his players.
Everyone in the off season played baseball (including most coaches), and under the rules your were allowed to make expense money.
