Gymnastic judges re-figured beam scores

At the end of yesterday's great opening meet the announcer stated the final team scores were delayed as the judges were re-figuring beam scores. Can anyone explain what the issue was? Why were they refiguring scores they had already posted? Have not been to a lot of meets but this was a first. Does this happen often?
It gives the impression of chicanery especially since Oklahoma had just finished beam and it was clear LSU had finished strong on floor and had taken the meet. The final results seemed a lot closer when considering the apparent OU beam scores when first posted. Any idea what happened?

I hate any sport that utilizes judges.

Actually thought they did a fair job of scoring throughout, just the end announcement seemed strange.

There could have been an appeal as to the degree of difficulty for a given routine. There are also specific point deductions for not performing a specific skill and how far a slip was. Not sure if they use video, but gymnastics TV coverage has a long way to go in explaining these things.

I can't say exactly why, but I do know they changed Ewing's beam score. She originally scored 9.775, but it was changed to 9.825. They were probably taking a really close look at that one.

That could very well be the case. I was not clear whether coaches are allowed to question judge's scoring. It would seem that it would require video if for example the issue was how far a slip was.
Do the judges confer with each other or just score independently and then average the scores.

That is a fairly significant change. Was that done at the end of the meet or earlier while LSU was on beam?

Any sport that relies on points awarded by bystanders instead of on head-to-head competition is not a sport, it is a hobby at best.

I was watching online, but judging by Twitter, it was done at the end of the rotation, before LSU went to floor.

Since a victor can be determined by judges, boxing is also just a hobby.

Truthfully, football is the only real sport. I can't respect or enjoy any of the others.

It really does not matter what it is called, but the skill level required in gymnastics is much higher than most sports. The difference between winning and coming in second may be a very slight nuance such as a foot slide. You have to be so precise in all phases of the routine.
In baseball you don't have to hit the ball squarely to get a hit , just hit it where they ain't. You can throw someone out on a perfect throw or one in the dirt.
A quarterback just needs to get the ball in the vicinity of the receiver for a completion. I know sometimes they make that great back shoulder throw or the receiver catches it in stride, but most throws are not perfect text book style.
Baksetball you can shoot 50% and be a pretty good player.
Instead of disparaging a sport why not just appreciate the particular skill required and the accomplishment within the parameters of that sport.

The start value of Sydney Ewing's balance beam routine was judged at a 9.9. LSU disputed this with the judges arguing that it should have had a start value of 10.0 and won the dispute.
That tenth of a point was critical with how close the meet was. Between Ewing's routine and the dispute being resolved LSU was trailing by a tenth of a point
