Both get easier at around the 250-500 round mark.

Thanks, that's good to know and what I was hoping for. I did notice today that it was a little easier loading rounds into the mags as well. I thought my thumb was going to be permanently bruised after shooting it the first time. I've never had as much pain in my thumb from loading mags on any other day of shooting in my life. And I've done some 700-800 round days before - with multiple guns.

I'm finally getting around to taking a conceal carry class tomorrow and will be putting at least 50 more rounds through it then. Bringing 100 rounds with me so I'll probably stay after and finish off the box.

I will say I shot it much better today. The trigger takes some getting used to. The take up(travel) before the break is a bit more than I'm used to on my 1911's and then it takes a good bit more pressure to get it to break. I'd read some reviews that the trigger feels "gritty" on some Shields and that is true. I will be dropping an Apex kit into it soon.

Wife held and fiddled with (did not fire) a Glock 19 and liked it? It's chambered in 9mm (don't know other chamberings). Any detractors?

I'm not a Glock fan and have never shot a Glock before (It's not that I've heard bad things. I just prefer other makes better - ie: Springfield XD's and S&W M&P's) but from what I hear, you can't go wrong with a G19 and if I'm not mistaken, they're only chambered in 9x19(aka 9mm Luger, 9mm Para, 9mm NATO - basically the most common 9mm on the planet).

It's a full sized frame and a lesser powered round which should help minimize the felt recoil and be easier for her to shoot.

BUT! I would still highly recommended finding a range that offers rentals and go shoot it before purchasing anything. Just because she likes how it fits her hand doesn't mean it'll be the same when she actually shoots it.

1. The Glock 19 is one of 5 Glock models chambered in 9mm. It's by far the biggest seller for Glock -- and it's one of the two most reliable handguns on this planet (The Glock 17, also chambered in 9mm, is the other one). They have a lifetime warranty.

2. You can buy the same sized Glock (same physical size) in .40 (Model 23) and in .45 ACP (model 30).

3. You cannot go wrong with a G19. But it would still be good for her to shoot one before you buy it. The Smith & Wesson M&P pistols in 9mm are comparable in quality, reliability, etc.

4. There are always detractors. On this board the biggest gripe is that the Glocks have no external safety (They do have three internal safeties). Of course revolvers have no external safety either, and haven't had them for 150 years.

5. Keep in mind that if you/she pulls the trigger on a Glock, it will go "bang." And if you do not pull the trigger, it will not go bang. This is how self-defense handguns should work. "Simple - Point & Shoot." LINK

Have her hold slide solid with left hand and keep it still. Then PUSH grip with right hand. Should be easier for her to move

What is this statement founded on? 9mm, 40, and 45 all pretty much do the same thing. Yes, it has less felt recoil. Yes, it has slightly less muzzle energy. But if you're choosing quality hollow points, the difference is negligible when shooting a living being.

I prefer Springfield too. But they are no longer the less pricey. And the slide on the XD 9mm I had was a bastard. I like the safeties of a Springfield. Just don't point it at anything. What people are taught from the beginning.

I just bought one of these back in November after the 10000000000 gun buying thread on the OT.

I had literally never fired a real gun in my life (34 yr old). I spent about a week afterwards watching youtube videos on everything from grip, gun range etiquette, how to strip and clean the gun etc. Went to the range a week later and put 100 rounds thru.

Never miss fired once, no casing ejection problems, nothing, it does exactally what its suppose to do every time so far.

Any of you other Shield owners find it difficult to use the slide release?

Yes. I've run about 150 rounds thru and it seems like it has loosened up a tad. Hopefully it will even more down the road. It's my wife's, and I know she struggles with it much more than my 1911.

To the OP....I ran my wife thru about 10 different semis to let her find the best fit for her. She settled on the 9mm Shield. She loves it. Fits her hand well, light recoil and she is very accurate with it. I enjoy shooting it as well. It's a nice gun for her first.

I was not speaking to the actual affect the round would have on the target. I was speaking mainly to felt recoil.

Glock 42 is about the sweetest shooting little gun I've ever tried. Very manageable recoil for a woman and will fit her hand perfectly.

Lol.

I love pistols. I will chirp up in every poli board gun debate, and compared to those guys must sound like I've applied for a "firearm intake specialist" with the Feds already.

Could become a collection like any other. Razors (DE safety), watches (got 2 pricey ones) , and other collections.

Go to Boyert Shooting Center off Mason (used to be Tactical) or Athena Gun Club off I10 next to Top Golf. Bth are very nice and offer a wide variety of guns you can rent. At Boyert , most rentals are $12 but they will waive that fee bc you have to buy a box of their $15 ammo. My dad rented the Sig P226 (bc I really wanted to try) but he still preferred my Springfield XDM 9. The Sig felt really nice but would be out of your price range.
