Much more likely to be true at a mainstream dealership than a luxury dealership. Most successful salespeople at high end dealerships do well because of referrals and repeat customers. Being a snake would actually be pretty short sighted.

Two of our current vehicles are from texas. Buy from a private seller. If you aren't mechanically inclined, become it.
Mileage or age doesn't bother me if the vehicle is maintained. High mileage on imports means a lot less than age. Age on domestics means less than mileage.
We just scored an early 2000s 4runner 4x4 in mint condition for 5300. Low miles. Slapped some coilovers on it, new tires, changed fluids, and I would drive it to London right now.

I went to the Lexus place down here to look at a few cars for my little sis a couple of years ago. They had a 97 4runner limited 4x4 listed at $17k. It was pristine, but still....

Get your financing in order before going to pick out your car. I recommend usaa if you qualify. Stick to your guns never accept their first or even second "best price". My wife traded in a Maxima one time. She was offered 6k trade in value. 3 days later after we kept telling them "no" they offered her 13k trade value.

I am here to help. We have bought a few cars for our daughters through the years. #1- I don't buy new cars for teenagers #2- They don't appreciate the first car so why bother? #3- Driving a beater creates character.
Rules for a used car buy
#1- Never buy from a used car lot
#2- New car lots that sell used cars are just below the first rule
#3-Word of mouth (friend who knows someone is usually best) We bought a Buick Century for my oldest. She had it 6 years and I sold it for dang near what I paid in 2009. (I did have to put money in it through the years)
#4- Newspaper ads are ok... Have the car checked out.
#5- Research the model before buying many are ticking time bombs.
I am glad you are looking for a good car that is budget friendly. Many people are irresponsible and buy shite they can't afford.

For all of you who travel long distances to buy a car (whether dealership, eBay, or private), doesn't that automatically give the seller the upper hand during negotiations? I mean... what are the chances of you walking away after flying there or driving across the country?

Rule #2 is completely wrong. You can find some great used cars at new car stores particularly if you find a car in the same brand as the franchise. I bought my used Acura at Acura of BR, got my wife's Audi at Jim Ellis Audi in Atlanta, and my sister in law got a used Camry at Team. First, these cars are often trade ins and have been serviced at that dealership. I've gotten service records on the Acura and Audi this way. Second, these cars all go their their service departments and dealerships wholesale them if there is anything wrong with them. I will take these odds over a car I find in the paper anyday.

One thing that I've found to be extremely helpful is to find message boards dedicated to the brand of car you're interested in, and then find threads on the model you like and let the internet turn you off from buying that car.

The internet sales companies sell 98% of their stuff online. The "lots" are really just big parking lots jam packed with cars. If they used bait and switch tactics, word would get out quickly and they'd have to shut down. I have always settled on a price before hand and told them I'd bring cash and if everything wasn't to my liking, I'd either reduce my offer or leave. Online sellers are very straightforward and take lots of pictures. They'll take plenty more if you ask because that's how they sell cars. They put up a low price, and let the car sell itself, only to make a small profit off of each car.
If you buy a car online and it is a POS when it gets to you on the truck, don't take it. Simple as that.
Drove to San Antonio once. Flew Spirit to Houston and they picked me up once. Agreed on price before each time and brought cash each time. Everything was exactly as pictured and like they said. No bullshite and no stupid arse salesmen to go back and forth with for three hours
