So under $10k?

My tip is to shop online in Texas. Has saved me many of thousands of dollars on the past two trucks

ideally you want one with a manufacturer's warranty. A price range would also help. Age and mileage threshold depends a lot on the make and model of the car.

You haven't gotten a good deal until your salesman visibly hates you. Even then, they're still making money off you.

Do your research on the particular model you're interested in, know what's a fair price, and don't budge from it. And don't let them add any bullshite fees. I had a spreadsheet on my phone to calculate total cost out the door during my last car purchase experience, and you'd be amazed at what they try to sneak by you. Had try to sneak the sale tax into the price twice. Used car salesmen are the slimiest of the slimy IMO.

do not buy used German unless you enjoy paying $600 brake jobs.

A lot of people say to stay away from 100k plus vehicles, but that's not quite true anymore. To me, it depends on what you think your future earning potential is. I wouldn't buy a two year old car if I didn't see myself crossing the 40k barrier anytime soon, but I wouldn't buy a rust bucket if I thought I'd be making a decent living.

Figure out how much you can spend, scan the local classifieds and ads, and be real with yourself on your negotiating skills. Also, make sure to check out Will Cover's car buying guide on the Money Board.

You may want to post this on the Money Board. Coach Guidry could probably answer some of these questions.

I mentioned to a co-worker that I was looking to buy used and they said something to the effect "don't buy anything over 50,000 miles" and "don't buy anything older that a few years." There was no reasoning behind this, just their personal philosophy.

That's just silly.

Anyway, I'm the kind of person who will drive a car until it dies (or until I get in a stupid wreck), so I'm tempted to go as low mileage as possible but just not really liking the inflated cost of the low-mileage trucks and SUVs. Seems pretty close to what you'd pay for new.

So are you looking for a truck/SUV? What kind of options do you want it to have?

I know this sounds crazy...but they are only able to sell you a car because they've made money from selling cars.

I refuse to pay excessive cash for a car. Go to your local AAMCO. Talk to the guy up front and tell him what you want, or look in his lot. Most of the time when a transmission goes out, the owner will dump the car for a few hundred bucks. Buy it, get the AAMCO guy to replace the trans. You'll have 2-3 grand in a great car. You are welcome.

Make sure you start a bidding war if you go the dealership route.

You can literally tell the dealership that you're looking at other dealers as well. They can't do shite or be a bitch about it, most times you'll end up saving a couple of thousand if you go this direction.

Also, I would buy before the end of the year, as dealers must pay taxes on vehicles that are remaining on their lots at the end of the year. So, getting a 2015 model or even 2014 model they will be willing to make a stupidly good deal for you.

I'm not a great negotiator, so I make sure to do all my research beforehand and come up with a fair number based on what other people are paying. I'll do the whole walkout thing, but it's not up on my list of things that makes me feel great.
