Well yea, it makes total sense to let one used Chevy from at least 11 years ago influence your thoughts an all domestic vehicles made since then.
ETA: Full disclosure, I currently have one domestic and two import vehicles at my household, so it's not like I'm biased against imports.

You forgot 2 things:
You said it was no longer 1980. The chevy was a 1995.
I have 12 1/2 years with Nissan vehicles with no problems outside of regular maintenance.

You're aware that newer Nissans have had lots of problems, like the CVT trans for starters right? You're basing your opinion off a very old model that has no bearing on how the vehicles are built today.

I found my Honda on cars.com. I had already decided what vehicle I was looking for.
2 or 3 years ago, I totaled my 2008 Honda. State Farm paid me over 18K for the loss.
I found a 2009 (same car a year newer) on cars.com with only 16K miles on it. It was listed at 17K. I made $1K wrecking my car.
At the time, it was still under manufacturer's warranty and came with 100K 7 year powertrain warranty.
Other than regular maintenance (battery, tires, oil changes), I've only had to pay for one $400 repair.
I have less than 75K miles on the car now and it's going to last forever, provided I don't wreck it (knock on wood.)
Moral of this story: Find a vehicle with as few miles as possible. You might consider a used vehicle that was a lease.
Edited to add: Make sure you look at Carfax reports on the vehicle(s) you're interested in.

I haven't had that issue. I will stick with vehicles that are proven to be reliable for me. My n=1.

And how do you find out how the vehicle was driven?
Salesmen will tell you anything you want to hear.
My car now has 72K+ on it. I cannot tell you exactly the number of miles are highway vs. city driving. But I can tell you I have had only issue and that was 1 month ago and issue is solved.

I'm not saying you got a bad car. Just pointing out that only looking at low mileage is not guarantee of a quality vehicle. We have a vehicle in our fleet at work that only has 40k miles on it, but they have all been stop and go downtown NOLA miles. I wouldn't take that car for free.

Got on cars.com and found a 2011 sienna from longview texas at peuges Hurst (sp?) Ford. Awesome shape loaded and they drove it to my house (2.5 hours away) and we signed at my kitchen table. Got it for a hell of a deal.

Don't discount eBay and other online avenues. I purchased a used truck (two years old with 11K miles) from a dealer and got a respectable deal on it even after paying for shipping from Atlanta area to Louisiana.

I have a high MPG car for commuting and a truck for weekends/towing/general manliness. The backup effect is just nice in the event of a breakdown.

Well for 13k you can have a brand new car with 10 year 100K powertrain warranty. If you truly drive cars forever, you could put 8k down and finance 5k. Pay it off over 1-2 years and have a payment free ride for another 5-10 years. Just a thought

I shipped a car from Michigan to ATL and it took no more than a week and at that time, it cost me $500.

A few of my family members have gotten cars shipped, and the cost has always either been picked up by the seller (expensive cars), or it was a flat $500
