I didn't love the movie. It was fine but the Han/Leia stuff seemed so forced. The "force" stuff all seemed weird: how is this chick who didn't even know what the force was in the first hour controlling people's minds and pulling a lightsaber with mind power. Luke couldn't do that after training with Obi-Wan and didn't control minds til after Yoda

The way I see it: Rey knew about Han's previous exploits and talked about stuff he'did done in the past. Han mentioned to them about the stories about the Jedi and the force being true. They had heard about the powers of the force and jedi. So she knew about that stuff, just didn't know she could do it.
As for the mind control, she persuaded a trooper to release her. If she has powers it's not too farfetched for her to be able to do that. As for the rest, sometimes you just have to let it go and enjoy the movie.

I think when Ren was trying to use his powers on her, it ended up unlocking her power. She kinda realized what she was able to do.

quote:Here's a question I get: who wants so desperately to be bad, that you would forsake your family, murder your father, destroy society, serve a hateful and horrifically ugly fiend such as Snoke... even as you are being pulled to the Light Side?
Ren, in his early training as he is now, is the opposite of Anakin. Anakin tried to be good but the darkside kept pulling at him and eventually he succumbed. Ren on the other hand is trying desperately to be bad, but the light side keeps pulling at him. He is teetering back and forth.
I get a moment of dark emo rage... when you're 13 or so. Maybe some bitterness that you're not ruling the galaxy if you truly believe that was your birthright (but that wasn't Vader's, not really).
Vader OT was powered by the Dark Side and had a ton of prestige in the Empire, the established government. He commanded armies and had his personal Super Star Destroyer.
Anakkin PT had the fear of loss, the desire to protect which superceded his vows, and he began training so late he already had emotional attachments that started the path.
Not saying there isn't anything, but we haven't seen it yet- what's Ren's motivation? Why does he want to be Vader, instead of Uncle Luke?
Did Luke do something? Did mom or dad (although we didn't have the "we failed him" moment)?

Kind of like The Agony with male characters in Dune. See Teg.

Yes, it appears his light broadsword was destroyed.
Thank god, maybe he'll get a normal single bean red saber.

I've seen this movie twice: one on X-Mas and then again a few days later, both times in 3d.
The movie was fun, but a bit shallow. I enjoyed it, but there were a few things that bugged me.
I've read through roughly 70 pages of this thread to figure out if people have similar theories to what I think is going on... so far, it doesn't seem like it.

Wasn't Anikan not allowed to get married? I kinda thought Jedi's were meant to be alone. But both Leai & Luke both have kids and possibly married.

quote:Well, multiple things here.

1st off is that the "official Jedi rules" are gone, as there is no Jedi order, no Jedi council etc. They are all dead. Luke received some Jedi training from Obi-wan and Yoda before they died, but they are gone now and the organization is gone too. He calls himself a Jedi for personal reasons, and others call him one since he can use the Force, but for practical purposes he makes his own rules.
2nd, Leia is not a jedi, she's a grown woman who learned in her early 30's that she had a long-lost twin brother and that she is Force-sensitive. Not only is there no governing body that can tell her not to marry, she isn't even trying (as Luke is) to be like a Jedi.
3rd, while we know that Leia has a child, we don't yet know Luke does. We might strongly suspect it, it might seem like the obvious call, but we don't know it yet.
As for the Anakkin marriage, it seems like it was strongly discouraged, but nothing was ever done about it. You'd think in an advanced civilization and with a group of people able to "sense" a lot of things, somebody would be aware that he was spending a whole lot of time shacking up with a particular woman, especially a public figure like a Senator.
About the issue of Rey being related to Luke or anyone else in particular- the Jedi seemed to be very diverse, and there were a fair number of them. And as you noted, marriage was discouraged; so it stands to reason the Force sensitivity was not just a genetic trait. If it was, they would have bred themselves out of existance pretty quickly, and not exist for the centuries the stories seem to suggest.
That being the case, Vader and Palpatine may have ended the institution and wiped out the current generation, but there should be plenty of new Force users popping up in the galaxy. Even 1 or 2 per planet would mean a bunch overall.

Maybe there were Jedi sperm donation banks that did not violate the code.

If Kylo Ren was in middle school

Everyone drew that shite when I was in middle school too.

Interesting youtube theory:
Rey is the daughter of Luke and Phasma
Snoke will complete Kylo's training by possessing his body

I don't know about that...but there's a shitton more to Phasma's story. I am wondering if she might be the "mole" in the FO.

Meh, it wouldn't be the first time producers tried to throw viewers off the trail.
It seems kinda strange that with all the lore available the producers would come up with a totally new big bad.

Apparently snoke is not Plagueis
Yeah, seems like that theory has been shot down.
Damn shame, since there's no way Snoke will be as interesting or intimidating as Palpatine was. Since Snoke was likely alive during the Imperial era, I can conclude that he wasn't as powerful as the Emperor was, or else Snoke would have taken control of the galaxy.
*ETA - I think Plagueis' return would have been a brilliant way to tie all three trilogies together. The first six movies encompass his apprentice and his creation first conquering the galaxy, then turning on each other. He returns to "finish what he started" - ensuring the Sith rule the galaxy.

I don't think Disney has any plans on going back to the prequel trilogy other then maybe really general ideas.
Could be wrong.
