This isn't all knee jerk. Some of us have been calling him the problem for going on 3 years.

Totally agree with all of this. Dell made a mess of our roster/payroll with a bunch of attempts at quick fixes. It's one step forward, two steps back on repeat.

We can create enough cap space in 2017 to add some star level talent upgrades, but that star talent won't want to come here unless it's to add to a proven product. Whether Demps and Gentry remain or not it's the same problem:

How do you add to or maintain the talent base in an offseason when everyone is likely to get overpaid on long term deals? Resigning Ryno and Gordon likely keeps you out of 2017 FA. If 2017 is the goal, trading Ryno/Gordon for future assets in a lost season and then overpaying Batum might be the best bet.

2016:

Tyreke/Ish
Holiday/Pondexter
Batum/2016 1st
AD/Cunningham
Ajinca/Asik

In 2017 I think CP3 is the most likely star you can convince to come to NOLA. The Clippers won't win, he's older with health issues and will start at around $32 million. Seems like the perfect fit for this team. If Holiday isn't healthy or there is a better option available, you can dump Asik to have about $15 million in cap space (about a $9-$10 million in today's cap dollars) which should be enough for a decent starter.

CP3/Ish
Holiday/Pondexter
Batum/2016 1st
AD/2017 1st
Ajinca/Asik

Don't really want to add him back at that point.

I think its pretty clear we need to blow it all up and start from almost scratch. Dump everyone you can but AD and start putting it all back together.

I wouldn't put anyone but Davis off limits at this point.

I don't blame you, especially at that price tag. There are 2nd tier guys like Milsap and Teague you could use that money on if you don't want Paul and can't get a Westbrook. And who knows what players will be available because the star FA movement causes some teams to dump guys and others to blow everything up. Especially if OKC breaks up, 2017 should be pretty chaotic which is a situation that favors the flexible.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if this team rebounds like last year. Demps adds another QPon or Cole like last year, Jrue comes off minutes restrictions, and the team starts figuring things out after a few months of banging their head against the wall. What do you do if you wind up 40-42, but were 32-18 over the last 50? That translates to a 52 win team. Pretty much the same situation we were in last year, start the season ready to move on, but end it thinking we're on the cusp of greatness.

Except this year the hole we dug is huge and we are played with a worse team to start the season with a harder schedule as well

At least Monty tried to preach defense. This Gentry dude has no clue it seems. Reminds me of the old Suns teams where you need to put up 115 and hope the other team doesn't score 116.

Gentry is an offensive guy The D is Erman. Everyone wasn't excited about the Gentry hire but everyone WAS excited about the Erman hire. People seemed to forget that Lacob ran Jackson out of GSW in part because he wasn't willing to bring in good assistant coaches. Erman was one of the coaches who Jackson had on staff. 1+1 says Lacob wasn't very impressed by Erman.

MJ ran off Erman when he found out he was recording meetings secretly. Firing Erman led to MJ bringing in subpar assistants. Like with Malone, Jackson didn't appreciate guys who would take credit from him. Erman got a lot of praise for his work there, particularly with Thompson.

Brad Stevens and Danny Ainge scooped Erman up very quickly after his GS exit and put him in charge of the Celtics D that featured Sullinger and Olynyk as a front line. That Boston team finished 14th in defense last season. Dude has chops. Not translating right now, but sharps like Lowe and Duncan were high on Erman.

The timing doesn't match up. Jackson fired Erman one month before he was fired. So no I don't think he was fired for who he brought in after Erman was gone that's not enough time.

Fair enough, you're right on the timeline.

You did completely disregard Danny Ainge and Brad Stevens hiring Erman very quickly after he was fired from GS. And guys like Lowe/Duncan being high on him. And that Erman was the defensive coordinator for the 14th ranked Celtics D last year featuring such stalwarts as Olynyk, Sullinger, and Zeller

You also forget that Erman was talking with management, that Jackson had clashed with Malone, and already frozen Scalabrine (an ownership favorite) out. You don't think the Erman stuff perhaps led to Jackson's ouster?

Every team deals with injuries. A hypothetical 82 game season with everyone healthy from start-to-finish isn't realistic.

You have to be able to win with a couple of your top 8 or 9 players out for periods of time.

How to fix the Pelicans:
Step1: Fire Demps
Step2: Fire Gentry
Step3: Remove Loomis from the pelicans atleast. He needs to focus on the Saints, this trying to be the VP of both teams is sinking both teams.
Step4: Hire new GM and head coach
Step5: Tank for Simmons
Step6: Draft Simmons or another top prospect if we don't get the #1 pick
Step7: Sign major free agent to fill the hole not addressed in draft.
Step8: Replace the multi-color and teal seats in the SKC with dark blue seats that match the pels colors. Wouldn't help the team win, but it would help my ocd when watching the games.
