I think Richt is a step above David Cuttcliff, but he is an example of a guy who had some success as a head coach, was fired (mainly due to stubbornness than the one down year he had at OM), went back to being a big-time OC, and waited for the right opening FOR HIM. Duke may not be a plum job, but it was a place without the pressures of the SEC where he knew they would let him do things his way. It's certainly worked well for him and the school.
The right fit is the key here. Richt has won conference titles and had success, and he certainly isn't poor. He can bide his time and wait for the job he really wants. If Mizzou, USCe, and Miami don't fit the bill (or don't want him), time and reputation are on his side.
If he doesn't jump on a current opening, he can take a year off to recharge the batteries, go the ESPN route (which he would be VERY good at), or as has been mentioned here, take an OC job. Like Cuttcliff going back to UT, it would be a high visibility position. Like UT before Cuttcliff's return, everyone knows about LSU's offensive woes. If Richt did this and it worked out, he would be the default number 1 candidate for every job.
It sounds like Richt may want to continue coaching for the near term, but he seems like he could make a good AD, as well. He seems like a calm, cool, solid decision maker. It wouldn't shock me to see him as AD at UGA someday.

he would be a hire that Miles couldn't necessarily bully when calling plays.
If you believe that I have a bridge to sell you.

He already is. Richt could get almost any job in the country

He'd look great in Baton Rouge, though...

I don't disagree to a point. He has looked "stale" at UGA the last couple of years, much like Miles. His reputation is still as solid as you can get. He just isn't the "sexy" hire for a program the equivalent of UGA at this moment. For a program a step down the ladder, he probably is. However, a brief home run stint as an OC (anywhere, not just at LSU) would just put a fresh coat of polish on his image.
I know he's a great coach. It's just hard to stay relevant when you are in the same place for a long time. Short of winning titles, no one can. What I'm talking about is just image, but big time college athletics is all about image today. It's a product, and people are always looking for something hot and new to sell.

It's definitely a place where he could play for a championship pretty quick if he could fix QB problem. IMO. Did Richt call plays on sideline when he was at FSU? Seems like if memory is correct he did. He definitely has quite a few options that's for sure.

it would be him wanting to coach and not be a hc bc if I was mizzou or USCe I would be all over him

do just what he said "coach qb's/call plays" and not your inserted interpretation of an 'ego wanting to head coach' td01241

What will Richt do when O rips off his shirt in the locker room?
Posted on 12/1/15 at 12:55 am to peanuts4brainz
Miles, Richt, Steele, the "hes a good guy" triumverite
Saban, Kiffin, Smart-hardass guys who win.
Richt as OC would be awesome though.

Would be awesome. An OC who Les would respect, would fit in well with the staff personality-wise, and has enough cred to be granted true offensive independence. If he just wants to hang out here for one year while waiting for a good HC position to open up (a la Mack Brown back in the day) I would be 100% ok with that.
He'll probably get snapped up as HC somewhere decent. If I was SC I would be thinking real hard about Richt - only issue is that do they really want a rep of taking their big brothers' castoffs?
