I need a device where someone can type and it will show up on a screen. My father can no longer talk and I need an idea to help him communicate. Must be very simple to use and not require Wi-Fi

All you need is a tablet/phone and an app.

There are actually apps for the iPad that will do this. I use them with a few of my nonverbal students. Just search google and use the app store. Some will allow type to text. Others, like the ones we use for students have pictures that they can string together to make sentences.

Kurzweil also makes a bunch of different text to speech and speech to text devices and apps.

Pen and yellow legal pad.

Simple, cheap, efficient.

That's the way I'm leaning but it can't be difficult to operate and can't require wi-fi.

All you have to do is download a simple "notes" type app and give it to him. No wi fi required.

Proloquo2go was built to function in the hands of non-verbal Pre-K students all the way up to adulthood...the usability is seamless once the programmer (you) gets it up and running.

It has communication boards, but it also has predictive text with a qwerty keyboard, pair this app with a bluetooth keyboard and you're good to go.

I would call one of the ALS support organizations and ask them where to get a device to support your dad. Idk why your dad cant speak anymore, but they use devices that have similar features to cope with ALS

Looked into boogie board tablets?

LINK

very simple and cheap, essentially an endless notepad & pen

unless there was a particular reason you want him to be able to type for communication?

ETA: They have models that can sync with computers via bluetooth and evernote.

Hope you find something, and best wishes for your father.

Does it have to be electronic? If I were in his shoes I think I'd rather just have a pad and pen for around the house communication.
