Former Arizona basketball star Michael Wright killed in NYC

Michael Wright was the starting power forward on the 2001 Arizona team that lost to Duke in the national championship game. Other players on the team were Richard Jefferson, Gilbert Arenas, Jason Gardner, Luke Walton, Loren Woods, and Josh Pastner (I think, he may have graduated by then).
He was one of the most productive guys on the team and was drafted in the second round. Ended up having a very successful international career, mostly in Turkey. Last played in France this spring.
Earlier this week he was found dead in his Lexus SUV in Brooklyn and police believe he was killed by a man he met on Grindr.

The original Tinder, except for gay men.

Sounds like he was closeted or at least his cousin makes it sound that way.
I'm kind of amazed that someone could beat a 6'7", 250 pound borderline-world class athlete to death.

Richard Jefferson, Gilbert Arenas, Jason Gardner, Luke Walton, Loren Woods

The area he was found in is sort of a four-points where black meets Hasidic meets Russian meets Muslim. I've never seen any trouble around there, but I've been on an outdoor subway platform or two out there in the wee hours, and it's way too quiet.

What? That Duke team was loaded.
Jay-Will, Boozer, Battier, Deng, Dunleavy, Duhon...one of the most talented college basketball teams ever.
ETA: No Deng

College ball was so much better then because guys stuck around for 3 years, usually.
Duke had Dunleavy Jr., Jay Williams, Boozer, Battier, Duhon, Nate James, Nick Horvath, and Casey Sanders.
Zona had 4 NBA guys, Duke had 5. Gardner and Wright were the two non-NBA starters in that game. Apparently Gardner is now the head coach at IUPUI

quote:I had seen Arizona play at LSU the year before, and Loren Woods wasn't very strong and turned out to be an overrated player who didn't pan out at all in the pros. Shane Battier was stronger and matched up well with him to say the least, and Woods was vulnerable to away-from-the-ball picks; it takes a little more than Woods' muscle to navigate through well-run five-man motion offenses. Duke also shot better from downtown (9-27 to 4-22), which alone accounts for more than the 10-point difference in final score. I can't remember who was guarding Gilbert Arenas (Jay Williams?), but whoever it was did a great job since Arenas was ice cold from the field that night.
still don't see how Duke beat them.
Cliff Notes: Arizona was cold all night. Their shots didn't fall.

That rumor has been around Jefferson for years, yeah.

It's amazing Lute only managed one title (with one of his more average teams in terms of talent) considering how absolutely loaded Arizona was for 20 or so years.
