In Regards to the Future Retiring of Numbers - Especially #7

How would LSU go about retiring the #7?
Obviously, after Fournette wins the Heisman, then he will be the most famous #7 at LSU, but considering those that have worn it, and may wear it, how do y'all think that situation would be handled?

Won't be retired for a very long time if at all. As weird it may seem to the older crowd, it has become a recruiting tool.

No number should ever be retired unless the athlete also graduates.

It's a legacy that will go on forever. Never retire the number! Fournette will be the next member of the ring of honor though.

#7 should be held out for only the most special players. That's how they do it in Euope and it works well IMO

Keep it alive for some future GOATs

Maybe way in the future once he rolls big in the NFL
If maybe like another LSU great comes in the next few years and wins a Heisman, they will surely retire it

Isn't PP taking classes to do that? I thought I saw that somewhere...
And I would LOVE it if Mathieu wound-up going back to LSU to graduate.
Hell, I could easily see Fournette doing that as well - seems like that kind of guy.

Why retire it? It's becoming a tradition, as much or moreso than 18..I don't see the logic behind retiring it honestly.

Well, that is what's typically done for players that had outstanding careers at a school.

Yeah, I'm not saying retire it next year, hence "Future Retiring of Numbers".
History tells us that LSU will not have players the caliber of the last few, and current, #7 forever - so the tradition can't last forever.

To date, Bert Jones is the greatest to wear #7. The man was the MVP of the NFL.

I think what would have to happen first would be for LSU to fall into mediocracy and stay there and a few years where no one of note where's the number. IMO, as long as LSU is good and can get the best players in the jersey, it won't be retired no matter who wears it.

Ehh..I don't know about typically. I know 20 is retired but that's really not a typical gesture in college football, particularly nowadays.

Not sure I agree with this either. Recent history tells us a couple of damn good football players are going to sign with lsu every year, and that one of them will end up wearing #7, as is tradition.
Maybe I'm just being a contrarian. Don't mind me rummy

They may retire the "jersey" but not the number.

And there you go...
Maybe ol' Bert would liked his number and name retired in the stadium.
Any chance they could retire the number with multiple names?

quote:Sure. It's called retiring a jersey. (As opposed to retiring a number.)

Fournette won't go back to LSU for classes unless he is interested in grad school one day, I read an article a while back that says his plan is to graduate in 3 years..
