Does anyone have experience with the .458 SOCOM? I do a lot of hog hunting at night with thermals and I wanted a more effective caliber (than the 300 BLK) Thanks in advance.

I don't know anything about it but do a little research on the .50 Beowulf

It looks like an awesome round amazingly similar to the .45-70.

Is the .300 AAC not taking them down? How much did you pay for your thermal?

I've read a little on thr .458. Seems that it may have a jamming issue. However if that was corrected, it looks like a bull of a caliber. Just not as many rounds held in a given clip.
Did you have bad results with the blackout? The blackout has been the rave or so I thought.

The .458 and the .450BM are fighting to see if one or both will last. The .450 has some reloading benefits. Both hit real hard.

7.62X39 is ridiculously cheap (.23 cpr) and will get the job done easy. You just have to find a reliable AR that shoots it. I recommend the CMMG Mutant.

5.56 is the way to go in a 20" barrel.

My uncle has a night rig in 5.56 and probably kills 200 a year with that caliber

308 win

These AR calibers of the month seem very lacking in the hog killing world.

Take your normal 223 and take the money you saved and rent a helicopter. This looks fun as hell :)

Honestly, if I were hunting hogs at ground level, I wouldn't use anything other than an AR-10 (.308).

It's a dangerous animal and a clean kill is important to me - if I hunted them I would definitely want to butcher the kills and either store the food myself, or give it to others for consumption. Having to pepper a beast with smaller and/or lighter rounds or have to be extremely precise with hits under hog hunting circumstances would be an added complication.

I have not, but it is intriguing. For hogs, I think larger caliber is smart. I wonder how much of a trade off this is in terminal velocity...
