When they televised, over and over, the Kiss.
That wasn't Mt. St. Helens blowing its top, that was the millions of remotes changing channels at once.

When Patrick and Olbermann became a thing and the prospect of ratings and big revenue became a possibility for a 24 hrs cable sports channel

Pretty much this. They moved into a spaceship studio, started having musical guests during the 5 pm Sportscenter, started their crappy original programming including PTI and ATH, and during the next couple of years lost quality talent like Rich Eisen and Dan Patrick. I remember their thing was emphasizing the "E" (entertainment) in ESPN.

As far back as 2002 it was all debate format
PTI
ATH
All the NFL shows were Sean Salisbury vs the "crypt keeper"
All CFB shows were Trev Alberts vs. anyone
It started in the late 90s because fox had a show called "the best damn sports show period" it's where Stephen a smith got his start in national sports television as well as Michael Irvin and a few others. It pulled really good ratings for a late night sports program, and ESPN started copying them, and even pulled talent from that show.

pti was a great show the first few shows. espn's downfall can be traced to 1) claiming the 2003 national title for usc and 2) hiring stephen a smith.

Pretty much this.

When Dan Patrick left. They let him go without trying earnestly to make him a deal he deserved, and I look back on that as the first of many unfortunate moves.

John kruk was on that show too
But the idea of athletes as hosts of a cable sports show started there; before then, players who became broadcasters were color analysts and pre game hosts, halftime hosts, etc.

When Berman got his 3rd chin.

ESPN in 2003 also hired Rush Limbaugh... and then fired him for making a controversial comment

I would say the decline started when Dan Patrick left. The moment I knew it was gone was Tebow mania and when they set up shop at Jets training camp.

When they started to do nothing but jerk off the $EC

ESPN always runs breaking news with (insert ESPN expert) confirms. They rarely give credit to outside sources that actually got the information. I can't watch that crap anymore.

When they got rid of "He got jacked up" and replaced it with "C'mon man" on Sunday Night Countdown.
