I'm Very new to waterfowl hunting and looking to start at least practicing calling with the season being right around the corner. Any recommendations for a good beginner call that won't break the bank? Thank you in advance

sound's like you'll fit right in if you're hunting Pointe Aux Chenes.
best bet is don't call at all.

If that's the case, then you may be ready to go for next season, and that's only if you hunt with someone that is very experienced this season often and are a fast learner. A very underrated part of calling is knowing when not to call, which is most of the time.

It's hard to beat a Haydel DR-85 Mallard Hen for the money.

My only holdup with the DR-85 was that a family friend told me that I'd probably just scare ducks away with a mallard call since I'm new to this and to avoid them all together right now., thanks for the suggestion though maybe I'll have to look into them.

The mallard quack is the most basic note to learn when calling and 90% of what you will do will derive from having the basics down. A mallard hen call is a must to begin learning. A teal whistle is a good idea too since it's cheap and easy to learn.

Well yea. You're going to suck with any call right now. Still need to get it and start blowing... in your car by yourself. Not at an actual duck you're trying to shoot.

The single-reed Arkansas blowers will not admit to it, but the DR-85 sounds more like a mallard than any duck call made...for someone with no real experience or skillset.

Don't go buy a $135 RNT or Echo until you learn how to blow a call. Single reeds sound great when blown correctly. There are very few that do it correctly though.

I have a DR-85 and I have been duck hunting all my life. Its just a really good simple call that will do all that you need for as long as you hunt.

best bet is just to sit tight, be quiet and don't be seen.
you'll not only scare ducks away, you'll piss off everyone around you and ruin hunts in the general vicinity.

Still have mine on my lanyard. Was my first call and the best sounding call I have IMO.

OP, get your hands on The Art of Commanding by Phil Robertson. I think he made this back in the early 90's. Way before DD. Will get you primed to at least know how to call and when.
