I'm looking at bringing in secondary income. I settled on an office cleaning business. Do you think I should start cold calling to get accounts before I get liability insurance or should I hold off until I get the insurance before I start making calls?

I would try and line up some business first if you got some prospects then get insurance. My .02

Wait please elaborate. I want to do this the right way. I don't mind getting the insurance first, but I've never done this. I was just trying to figure out the most effective approach. Thanks in advance for all your input. I've already got my EIN, business license, and I've registered my business name.

Well, its up to u. If you want to spend money before you have actual accounts then do it. Most would wait till they are certain they will have money coming in.

I'll throw in another .02 on that. Establish whether or not this will be worth it first.

Get the business first. Just do not advertise you are insured if you aren't yet. Nothing wrong with telling them you are enacting insurance and will be fully insured prior to working in their property. Go ahead and get your insurance quotes now. Most are good for 45 days and can be put into place the same day you tell them to. Get a client first then pull the trigger.

Think about schools too. Every classroom needs to be cleaned every night.

No account of any substance is going to sign if you don't already have insurance.

Honestly, not having it already would tell me you aren't really committed to the enterprise.

I wish you success, but I think most prospects would see it my way.

Yep.

And don't forget that insurance is a cut throat business. You can easily find a carrier to cover you in 15 minutes and be on month-to-month. Should you fail to land contracts, you could terminate your insurance.

A lot of schools contract out their cleaning with union-type companies. You've got to put in a request to get anything done and aren't even allowed to clean your own office. Plus, it's a huge job

My neighbor has three jobs, one of which is cleaning offices. I highly doubt she has insurance. The problem I see with it is that you've got to wait until everyone is gone to clean up (she normally goes around 10pm)

You can never make too many cold calls. Start this morning and just start calling, be persistent.

A lot of businesses will require you to get GL coverage before you start working (they will want to see a copy of your COI).. $1M occurrence $2M aggregate limit. It's smart to have regardless. Especially if you are doing any floor waxing. Just my opinion.

Yeah, I was thinking $300k/$600k would be sufficient coverage, but you could be right on going with the higher limit. Thanks everyone for the advice. I'm going to get some quotes today. I think I'm going to line up one account first before purchasing the policy.

And if you don't get any clients this morning, try again this evening between 6:00p and 9:30P.

id start with nothing and then ask the client their insurance requirements. one customer may only request 300k of coverage. you may not get a customer that requires 2 million for a year or two. In that case you would have wasted money. you can always get more insurance when needed.
