The school I went to in Memphis is now $20k and so is the school my sister went to, but our parents got half price because my mom taught at an elementary school that was a feeder school to the boys/girls schools we went to. I'm not sure my wife and I will be able to afford that, so we live in an area with a good public school.

it just depends on where you live. If you are zoned to Memorial, 281 schools or to lesser extent Lamer/Bellaire i can see the justification on going public.

The funniest thing looking back was all the wannabe gang bangers that went to schools like Bellaire. Private schools have a much shorter leash with kids, my old school even drug test now which would have had 80% of us kicked out.

around $7K a year for Menard(non-Catholic person tuition), plus every thing they can hit you up for during the year.

My son is only 1, but we are already starting to look. Do you think John Cooper is worth it compared to the rather decent public schools in The Woodlands? As of right now, my wife will have paid off all her student loans and basically her entire salary can go to our kids education. I already cover the rest of the expenses. But I'm just not sure if it's worth the 20k+ price tag when the public school option isn't all that bad.

I have a family member that works at Cooper and I went to and live in the The Woodlands. The academics at Cooper are legit and the amount of pressure on the kids is crazy. I can't see forking that over for lower levels but if you have a truly exceptional student on your hands there is good reason to send him/her there. For the above average student I just can't see justifying it given the public options available.

Just realize with the money going through that place you will be sitting at the high rollers table.

What exactly do you mean by this? I think I agree but I'm not completely sure what you're saying.

I went to a fairly affluent public high school and it was fine, but if I have kids I will definitely send them to private school. By that time, I'm sure our society will be so trashy it will be well worth the price.

Well, for context, I live in town Atlanta in a reasonably nice neighborhood with lots of young professional families and older couples. My parents live in a suburb that was once one of the best areas in the state, but is now on the decline as most Atlanta suburbs arguably are. The people around them are middle class to upper middle and the schools are considered quite good by generic measures (blue ribbon, schools of excellence, etc.)

Anyway, we do social stuff with our in town resident friends who have their kids at good pre schools, k-5 private schools or our neighborhood public elementary school, which is among the top 3 or so in the city and is a feeder to the top private schools for 5-12. I also see and interact with families in my parents' area, and the difference seems pretty apparent in my limited experience.

Meaning, the kids just seem a lot sharper and better socially. It's kind of hard to describe, but they seem less generic than their suburban counterparts. I'm guessing this has to do with the type of activities they're involved in, parenting and schooling, but I have to assume schooling is probably some part of it.

We are in the only area of the woodlands not assigned to Conroe ISD. We will not send our kinds to the Magnolia school they would go to. We didn't realize this when purchasing because we're idiots. Only really found out when we talked to neighbors and realized they send their kids to Cooper. Good chance we won't be here in 4 years anyway, but it's worth being prepared. We would likely buy a new house in the woodlands high school district and pay the one time hit of closing/moving costs rather than pay 20k a year for Cooper. But if it's exceptional, it may be worth it.

Ok yeah we're on the same page. I'm a generic suburban counterpart.

My background as well. I'm just seeing it from the other side as an adult at this point.

Averages $5,490 for elementary schools and $17,875 for high schools around here. Very glad I live in a good public school district.

Your potential kids won't have to go to school with those icky Mex's, will they?

You have to actually live in the school district to go to Scottsdale schools. So as long as we live in Scottsdale our future child will have mostly white classmates.

Around 25 grand a year. Luckily, only losers that got kicked out of public go to private schools here.

Here it's gonna normally be for religious reasons or the family just has the money for it.

Depends on the school. Catholic primary schools are 3-5k per kid. Some private schools in the area go up to $20k for primary school.

2015-2016 tuition for Kindergarten through Class 12: $41,100
Additional expenses: $1,500 to $5,200, depending on grade level

That too (religion) but not money. The privates aren't on the level of most publics.

Teachers at private schools are not required to be certified and make less than a public school teacher...which means they draw bottom of the barrel talent.

Really? I did not know this.

Because it's not true. My X was a principle at a private K-12 school. 90% certified teachers. They save on a few spots in elective subjects if they can get a teacher going to night school.
