Glad somewhat else thinks this. I am so puzzled over his role. Not since Danny MCCray have I been so perplexed. It must be character or leadership related, because he hardly ever is noticable.
If he is playing more a Nose Tackle role, he job is not to be notice but be a war daddy for the 3-tech shooting his one gap and the LBs.
Kid has one solo tackle but over a dozen assist? That is a kid doing his job.

Everybody plays cupcakes, no?
3 SEC wins, 4 P5 wins...
Yeah but we missed out on an early cupcake.. but during that game we really did get after them and forced a quick 3 and out.. we had a sack in that game.. but none of it counted..
And all of our cupcakes outside of eastern michigan were undefeated at the time.. we had 3 ints vs them btw.
syracuse was a good team regardless who was QB.. and that was still on the road early in the morning. still their qb had like a freaking 27 qb rating.. even with the 3 tds given up.. i mean come on.. it was pathetic.. and they got some meaningless late tds..
again, i'll take this defense over last years at this point.. we haven't even reached midseason to turn things around.. this defense is getting turnovers and making far superior tackling.. look at the linebackers spread out stats.. oh and deion jones has a pick 6 i believe? how many pick 6's did we even have last season? i really can't remember..

I just hope people can come to appreciate good positioning and solid tackling stopping the run is far more important than being out of position or testing things out late in games and given up meaningless TDs through the air off poor field position..
Held everyone under 100 yards except Auburn who had 160..
Still a massive improvement. Adams dropped an easy INT in this game I believe.
Again, there is nothing more demoralizing than being run over and missing tackles. Just ask Auburn.. That will make a defense real ugly in a hurry.
Let's get Mills back ( I hope he is truly 100% ) and get the secondary some help with better field position all game.
I just hated the Steele hire at the time it happened, but have really been impressed over the off-season and since game one. I really like it now. He isn't changing too much, but from what I see we look far more sound against the run and running qbs. The coverage should continue to get better and gel with experience.
Also, with more scoring.. which we are scoring so much better this season... we are going to give up more points. Don't get discouraged by this. It's just how it is with Miles.. It's still a young defense and Miles will allow younger guys to get experience in these games late and even try experimenting.. but this defense should really start coming together at the right time.

LSU is leading the conference in total defense per game against conference opponents.
Additionally, LSU leads the conference in point differential per game against conference opponents at +15.7 points per game.
You're cherry picking stats and I still think we should be better and would have been in past years.

LSU has played the 47th toughest schedule according to football outsiders, and the last 3 QBs they faced were not starters for their respective team in august.
I'll reserve judgment until LSU plays a team with a pulse and wins because LSU stopped them, not a delay of game penalty.

LSU has faced 1 top 50 scoring offense and that was MSU which is at 46th in scoring offense.
On average, they've faced the 75th rated scoring offense on average thus far this season.
They aren't facing juggernauts.
I'd hope the defense wouldn't look horrid against bad offenses, yet they've looked average at best against significantly weak offenses all season.
Yes, there were some scenarios that led to points not due to the defense, but there is cause for concern with this defense, and in particular their insistence on running in a nickel package so much. We rarely see a 3 LBer defense, yet we have a starter from last season on the bench while Thomas continues to play the nickel and get embarrassed.

Exactly. He's playing the 1 tech and doing a great job.

Before that penalty, Tre White batted down an on-target pass to D. Wilson, who had been eating his lunch the whole 4th quarter. That was before the delay. They complete that pass, and the extra 5 yards for the penalty probably doesn't matter. It is a more mama me kick.
Bottom line- when the D needed to dig in, they came up with a play. Dak was just kind enough to give us a little lagniappe.

Have you watched our LBs other than Beckwith and Debo play this year? Have you see the stat comparisons that have floated around here with those guys on and off the field? There is a reason we run so much Nickel.
As for Thomas, he has been the weak link, but who behind him has looked better? We haven't see Paris a ton, and Jackson just isn't ready to be an SEC CB for meaningful minutes yet. Our safties are good, but if you put any of them other than Mills out there in the Nickle slot, you are asking to get beat even worse.

I'm not crazy about the big plays we've given up, but overall, I'm happy with the defense when it is fresh. We do not look good fatigued and with subs in (and who does) - but we do not appear to get stronger as the game goes on, despite our general advantage in TOP and running the ball when we have it.
The lack of depth and late game swoon could cost us a game or two in the brutal final season stretch.

D has maintained, Recruiting has skyrocketed. Seems like a home run hire so far.
Home run? no
Solid double that put runner in scoring position? yes
You win more games with double than home runs so. It was a good hire and keeping the assistants and adding coach O made it a great hire. D has been less than I had hoped, but other than MSU the games haven't been close so we can afford to give up yard (and special teams is a huge factor in that). I still want to see to how our D does in a crunch, but if LF7 and the offense want to keep winning by 20+pts/game I will not complain about the D giving up garbage time yardage or not being tested.
Now to fap about the thought of our D with the new recruits in the cumming years.

We had a guy named Kwon playing linebacker. He now starts for the Buccaneers.

LSU is 14th in Total Defense.
They've given up 4 plays of 40+ yards, tied for 33rd in the country.
They've given up 8 plays of 30+ yards, tied for 32nd in the country.
They've given up 13 plays of 20+ yards, tied for 10th in the country.
They've given up 54 plays of 10+ yards, tied for 14th in the country.
They're also tied for 11th in the country for fewest Defensive Redzone Attempts.
Yet they rank 49th in Scoring Defense... our special teams also 127th in Punt Coverage and 117th in Kickoff Coverage.
