What was it like watching Barry Sanders in college?

Obviously what Fournette is doing is getting plenty of fanfare, but as good as he has been - 210 yds/game, 8.6 yds/attempt - it has only been 3 games.
Meanwhile, in 1988, Sanders put up 2628 yards on 344 carries in 11 games - 239 yds/game and 7.6 yds/attempt. His per game average is 26 yards better than Marcus Allen's mark in 1981, and he is one of only 3 backs who have broken 200/game in a season. He also rushed for 37 TDs which is 4 better than the 2nd best season in NCAA history (8 better than the previous record holder).
I remember Sanders well in the NFL, but I'm too young to have seen him play in 1988, so I'm interested to see what some of the older guys remember from that time.

With the way tv contracts were and lack of channels back then I doubt many people saw him play very often .
NCAA anti trust case was in 1984.

Good point. I've seen some of his prowess on YouTube, and I'm sure there are plenty more videos there I should probably watch.

Everyone on the MSB was born in 1995 or later. LeBron is the GOAT and sports nutrition was invented in 2005.

No doubt you were scouting him hard the three times he was on TV as a college starter.

Marshall Faulk was the best player I ever saw live. Next was Bush. He was insane in the Fog Bowl.
I would have loved to see Barry and Bush against Fresno.

He was also a great punt and kick returner.

A few of his games were televised. He was so good. They also had one of the best college WRs to play, Hart Lee Dykes. They had some talent on offense.

Every game he was breaking multiple long runs and leaving would-be tacklers grasping air. Best college back I ever saw. He was like trying to catch a fly in flight.
What's incredible to me is he ONLY averaged 239 a game. THAT'S how good he was.

He was explosive but he was also aided by Hart lee and Gundy. Imagine Reggie Bush.
In terms of best College backs I have watched my list is in no order
Dorsett
Sanders
Rozier
Bo
Herschel
Campbell
Dickerson
Bush
White, C
Simms

Those stats don't even include his Bowl Game. If you count that, then he had 2,850 yards rushing and 44 total touchdowns in 12 games!

Like watching your dick fall off but opposite.

Even more incredible. He didn't have the same line and that game against Nebraska was awesome.

Not all of his games were on TV nationally, but we did get to see the highlights for ones we didn't see and he was spectacular. I remember discussing that if he didn't win the Heisman, they should retire the award. Tim Brown won the year before mostly on preseason hype, the fact that Sanders was not by far the biggest margin of victory speaks to that.

Tim Brown cemented it by his play and the punt return vs Michigan St at night in nationally televised game.
Brown played 4 positions, which is why he won it.

I think he was only on TV on the east coast once before bowl season. I remember they would always cut in to show a highlight of Okie St, and he'd be doing something amazing, but that was it. But I think Bedlam was the only time I ever saw him.
College football was more of a newspaper sport back then, and I remember sitting at the kitchen table on Sunday morning, looking at his amazing numbers in each box score. I do remember some talk that he really wasn't that good because the Big 8, outside of Nebraska and OU, was lousy and OSU lost to both of them.

He played at Cajun Field in '86 and only returned kicks. As mentioned earlier in the thread Thurman Thomas was the starter.
