New York City - suggestions on what to do

We are going to be going to NYC the weekend before Christmas with brother in law and sister in law. I've never been before, we will be there 3 days. I believe we will be staying in the Times Square area. Any suggestions on what to make sure we do in the couple of days there.

If you get a nicer day, the High Line was pretty cool to walk.
I also really enjoyed going to Drunk Shakespeare.

Make sure to do a Christmas lights tour...we rode on the top of a double decker bus...cold but so worth it!

If you only have a weekend I strongly suggest picking one neighborhood and seeing all it has to offer. There's so much to do in the city that it can be overwhelming to try to hop from one end to the other. If you're in your late 20s/early 30s I suggest hitting up the East Village.

Sign up for a Food Tour. One of the best things I did in NY and I did a lot.
Also, the Natural History Museum and Metropolitan Museum of Art are cool too.

Stay in meat packing district.
Top of the rock > empire state building.
Avoid the huge touristy stuff, just walk around and pop in bars and restaurants that look good.
Picture at the Seinfeld coffee shop was a must for me first time I went.

The Met Museum, natural history museum, broadway show, for statue of libery dont do a tour just do ferry to staten island and ride it back...otherwise you lose half a day and you get a better view, Top of the Rock buy tickets in advance.

Spend some time downtown in West Village, Soho and Nolita. Beautiful prewar buildings, great neighborhood restaurants and bars. Tribeca nice also. You can stroll through there after seeing the 9/11 museum. Walk the High Line and have drinks at the Standard. Everyone should see the tree at Rockefeller Center and the Christmas windows at Saks across the street. One of my favorite times to go.

If you are only going to be there for 3 days at Christmas, I wouldn't do a museum, unless it is the 9-11 museum or MOMA, which won't take up a whole day. Book tickets now for the Rockette's Christmas Spectacular at Radio City. Take a horse drawn carriage ride through Central Park and stop at the skating rink. Also see about an evening Broadway show. Go to Rockefeller Center to see the Christmas tree and the skating rink. Then walk out to Fifth Avenue and take in the holiday-themed store windows. I agree about doing Top of the Rock, but get tickets in advance. We like the Upper West Side...if you are a foodie, Zabar's is a must.

Get out of Times Square and go to the Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Midtown, Greenwich Village, Little Italy and China Town. Ask local people where to eat, they are much nicer than advertised. Go see a Broadway or off-Broadway show and enjoy the world's greatest city.
