I've watched both videos. I can also selectively choose videos in which bands sound good and/or bad. For example: Trumpet screaming out of tune: 51 seconds

Southern does have good musicians and can play in tune with control when they want to; as shown in your second video. However, the playing as loud as possible until your cheeks blow out method has been proven time and time again to lead to being out of tune.

Some people don't care and others do.

And the only ignorant statement was the fact of you citing race as to why people don't care for Southern's sound. Now THAT is ignorant.

In show style bands. Songs like break bread are used as warm up songs

Break Bread sure can be a warm up and is often used as such. However, my point was that even a warm up song can sound MUCH better than that "performance" you posted. (By the way, TGBFTL plays it as the last song of the night after the game which means they've been playing all day so they still have that control when they're tired.)

The new video you posted, while better than the first, still shows a band that's not as together as they need to be. The horns can't get tight and they don't sound as one. (TERRIBLE at 0:12!!) I even think one of the directors turned around to look because it was so bad. The bottom line is that LSU's band is simply a much higher caliber. And as far as style of playing and what people like, that's all subjective. Most don't want to see SU's band do a more subdued corps style show. They want loud and dancing so that's what they get. That's their style and that's fine. (Albeit we're not talking about that here.) LSU's band is a more corps style with emphasis on musicianship in addition to marching.
TGBFTL horns shown HERE are incredibly together and they sound as one.

If you don't think people's opinions on HBCU marching bands are impacted by the fact that they are HBCU MB's for that reason alone. Especially in the south. Then idk what land you live in but I'd love to be there. I've experienced it first hand.

5th Quarter, after a full game of playing. LINK

Sounds much better than your post to me. The difficultly in those two arrangements aren't very high. Plus Southerns book is huge, much bigger than a corps style band. If you don't believe that Show style band don't pay as much attention to musicianship, then your just mistaking.

Of course opinions are impacted.

However, in the "land I live in" correlation does not equal causation. Just because it can be correlated that some jackass individuals dislike the sound because they are HBCU does not mean that all individuals dislike the sound for the same reason.

The poster simply said "In terms of musical quality, they stink" and your immediate response was to call out "race". Basically, you're saying the individual cannot have a negative opinion of the band unless it was racially influenced.

Hopefully, you'll figure out one day that in today's world, race is not *always* the default determining factor

They took out the STTDB part from the song

Huh. Still sounded pretty natural. Won't stop the student section from trying.

Gosh that video is horrible!!

Even watching it you can see that they don't care about anything but LOUD because they are huffing and heaving to try and blow more air. I really avoid calling stuff crap because I do appreciate all types of music but wow..., that's crap. I can see that they don't care about musicianship by simply watching their body language. And by the way, you have NO way of comparing either bands "book" because you simply don't know. How would you know how big a corps style bands "book" is??? When did I bring that into question?

Again, the bottom line here is that I'm not going to change your mind and you won't change mine. (Besides, the horrible typing and grammar are just a complete reminder to me not to argue with idiots.)

Well technically, that's not "part" of the song, so they really wasnt any taking out

And secondly, the LSU student section wasn't there. That's why you don't hear it

ETA: ahh never mind. I see what you're saying now. SS will still frick it up though

This is well-said. My sons are/were high school bandsmen at a school with a fantastic military style band. It beggars belief when a large population believes a "blast-issimo" type band is good, when, with some control they COULD be great.

im positive 80% dont know the actual song. You dont even know how well that song was played. I feel like if you have no clue what they're playing you wont recognize it as good.

What a completely ignorant statement! I can recognize great playing. For example, I have no idea what Phantom Regiment is playing in this clip, but I know it's fantastic!!

When it comes to marching bands this isn't remotely true. See the link to Phantom Regiment above. I have no idea what they're playing but it's one of the most beautifully arranged pieces I've ever heard. SU playing and dancing to Back That arse Up is fun and all but that's about it.

i wont dispute that its bad "musicianship" because im not a musician, but id say it wasnt bad because it wasnt foreign to my ears. Had I not known it I probably wouldve said its not really all that great. Thats all im really saying.
