what exactly did you say to "straighten him out?"

BTW, I thought your wife was the one with the balls in your family...I always took you to be a little pussy.

Did he really yell at him or did he say it in a joking way.

It was a full blown, angry yell. Not a joke, or even a mild comment out of frustration. I joke with my son all the time, maybe too much. It was nothing like that. Joking and getting kids to have thicker skin is one thing. Public humiliation of a 5 year old is another.

OP said 4 or 5. Are you seriously picking this apart? Give it a break. He shouldn't yell in the manner he did even if he was a little older and in a different situation.

Eta damn autocorrecting cellphone

Yep, i have a turned not far ago 4 yr old boy, i'd be much more lenient on him than my soon to be 6 yr(still 5) old girl having that trouble. I'd yell and then maybe head slap her if she was falling all over and not pushing hard enough. I'm a father with a 4 and 5 yr old, big big difference, my opinion is super qualified, and i live 4 minutes from that spot, so basically my opinion means everything.

can't imagine the kids of today being coached by some of the coaches I had growing up

My dad coached me in baseball growing up. He had coached high school/legion ball and when I was getting older, he started coaching my teams. My dad is a really good coach in general. He's coached teams to state finals in several different sports. He's coached everything: swimming, tennis, track, baseball, football, softball, etc.. It was absolutely miserable to have him as my coach. He was noticeably harder on me. I remember being a catcher and my friends were learning to throw curve balls (11 or 12). If I didn't stop it, I had to duck walk to get it (huge area to the backstop). After about the 30th ball thrown 20' over my head, I about quit baseball for the rest of my life . He told me to get off the field if I didn't like it. I had a rough relationship with him sometimes. But, I also made 1st team all region my senior year and was not born with the physical talent to get that kind of honor. I definitely think he made me a better ball player and I thank him for that. Some things I couldn't see as a kid, I get now. It's a fine line for sure, but getting on your kid for certain things isn't automatically horrible. Making him run for screwing up in competitive sports is not a bad thing.

I truly thought some of our coaches were trying to kill us

No and If I was coaching I would coach just like the coaches I had...of course the parents would probably have charges pressed against me

That kid will likely achieve greatness of varying degree and think back to that instructional moment as the kick in the butt that he needed.

Some kids react better to coddling, some to harsh words. Maybe the dad was a POS or maybe he knew his kid and how to motivate him better than you.

This. Probably has a really, really bitchy wife at home. He works his arse off all day and comes home to fricking Godzilla ripping him a new one because he forgot to turn off the light in the hallway that morning. Kid's lucky dad is there at all with the shite he has to put up with from snaggletooth back home when she's not stuffing her face with bonbons with her friends on girl's night, which is every fricking week.

Sadly, I can relate! LOL

My situation ended better though. Was only rough with my little dude for a moment, then realized how stupid I looked. Good lesson learned.
