As a taxpayer and citizen of N.O., I'm none too happy about the city being forced to pay $140 million in one lump sum. frick those firefighters. Unionist pigs at the trough.

Agreed. Union extortion at it's worst. Firefighters, police, teachers, etc all have absurd pension plans they get by selling their votes to the politician that promises to steal from taxpayers to pay the bill, then they strike or sue 1st time things get tough.

We can sit here and say they are greedy or whatever, but the fact is that the city signed an agreement saying they would be paid X and given Y in benefits, and then when it came time to pay, the city paid less than X and less than Y.

Tell you what, on your next paycheck, why doesn't your company only pay you 500 less than your salary, and only pay half of the match you are supposed to get, and then if you say anything to complain, they can just say you are greedy.

Pensions need to go away for the future, but if the city made a promise to pay, it needs to pay.

How that happens, I don't know.

It's an incentive to take these jobs because they have literally the worst jobs in America. you couldn't pay me double what I make to do any of those jobs.

Those groups get paid squat in Louisiana. Firefighters and police have dangerous jobs so I support their "absurd" pension plans 100%.

I wonder if we can take down some more statues to help solve this. Quick Mitch, what can we remove that will solve this problem?

The pension is just one part of it. And, it's not the part that is the subject of Reese's order.

This is about overtime put in since the '70's by firefighters that the city not only refused to pay, but they kept firefighters on the same schedule racking up overtime over all these years.

The only reason good people take jobs with those pensions is because of them. You could either get paid less with a rock solid retirement in the system, or go make more money privately. You don't see gov employees crying about decreasing private sector pay, do you? Just pay those taxes.
