People will raise the 70+ point debacle against WVU
What's interesting about that game is that WVU actually had almost identical stats against LSU that year, but the difference was we forced turnovers and got a few 3rd down stops where Clemson couldn't get off the field.
WVU against Clemson: 589 total yards, 407 passing, 31 first downs, 1 TO
WVU against LSU: 533 total yards, 463 passing , 28 first downs, 4 TO
That 2011 WVU offense rolled up yards and points on a lot of teams, it's just that Orange Bowl was so high profile it sticks out in everybody's mind.

I think the one thing to be a little concerned about is that, against the spread teams, we're going from a read and react style to a much more aggressive style. this can easily blow up in your face if Auburn calls a stretch zone and we're looking inside zone or vice versa. It almost becomes like tecmo bowl and Gus is pretty good at picking the play you're least expecting. This has been less of an issue in the past because of the more read and react style Chavis likes against spread teams, particularly when we've been stout up front, which hasn't been the case the last 2 years as much as it had been in the past. The plus side of it though is that read and react style can get you beat late in games like we saw, and also when we tried to be more aggressive it wasn't always as successful because that's the opposite mindset we played with most of the time. It's also less likely to generate turnovers than an aggressive style unless you have Tyrann Mathieu on your team.

Let's not forget, that the reason guys are given HC jobs is because they were VERY good at their previous jobs.
In Steele's case, coaching LBs in the NFL.
I'm semi concerned with scheming, but there are enough playmakers on this team that it shouldnt matter too much.

At this point, let's go with what we got!

A. He's not LSU's HC, so I'm not really concerned about his ability or lack thereof as a "Head Coach"
B. If his success at Bama was a result of them having great players, then he should be fine at LSU.
Your worry that he won't be good at LSU because he wasn't a good HC at Baylor is a illogical. LSU has much more talent than Baylor ever did and LSU isn't asking him to be the HC. I still have questions as to whether or not he'll be a good DC at LSU, but not for the reasons you stated.

Who gives 2 shits what he did at Baylor in the early 2000s. I care way more about his time at Clemson, but I feel like the defensive talent here is light years better than what he had to work with at Clemson. He'll be fine and I feel like we might actually get better. There was definitely room for improvement in the front 7.

I don't care about his history as a head coach.
His history as a DC is a bit concerning though.

Of all the possible concerns, this is what you came up with?

Has no bearing on how he will fare as a DC. Now, if we give up 500 yards to McNeese.....then I'd say "Houston, we have a problem."
Until we look like hammered, confused shite on the field (see Miss St. '14), he gets the benefit of the doubt on his coaching abilities.

in all honesty, in a reduced role, just running the defense with as much talent that he will have and the best DLine coach in the country, i think we'll be fine
Dinardo and Lou Tepper say hi!
