Every now and again I hear my mom say how much time I spent studying and doing homework when I was in high school. Truth is, I was either drinking beer, trying to get laid, or smoking weed and drinking coffee at CC's on bluebonnet.
Spot on. Parents turn completely clueless and you can get away with anything, all you have to say is that you're doing homework.

For all of you that are claiming BS, how many of you have children who are in the early elementary school grades in schools that have adopted Common Core?
All of these "back in my day" stories lead me to believe the next thing you'll be doing is telling people to get off your lawn.
I think Common Core in the end will make our kids smarter, but my goodness the adjustment is nothing short of awful. I can remember when I was a kid, 2nd grade homework was 20 min, tops, if we had any at all. That was almost 30 years ago, though.
And while maybe some HS kids are goofing around in their room during study time, my second grader does her homework at the kitchen table, with my wife who is a teacher helping her.

I graduated HS 4 years ago and have 4 younger siblings all in prominent private elementary schools/high schools. I know for a fact that none of them do nearly as much homework/studying as some people are claiming in this thread and they all have great grades.

Which probably means they have outstanding teachers and possibly aren't adopting common core. The teachers are probably experienced and actually teaching in school, leaving homework to simply practice what they learned.
As opposed to kids actually having to learn during homework because the topic was not discussed during the day by the teacher.
I know you are approx 22 years old, but do you think possibly other people might have different experiences than you?

Absolutely I think it's possible. I have a couple friends that really struggled through high school and spent hours a night with tutors doing homework and studying. Some people have to work harder than others.
Same thing is true with sports. Some kids can show up to practice 2 times a week and be the best on the team while others need to have private training sessions for hours a week just to struggle to make the team.

That's complete BS. That student is either Special or needs to be evaluated if it takes 3 hours to do anything for a 5 grade class, including the big science project.

In 5th grade I had about 2-3 hours of hw every night. And at my high school we had 3+ hours of he every night.. Also I always played sports. Its very tough, but if you work your butt off for it its possible to still succeed in both

My son is a freshman, pre AP classes and plays football. I pick pick him up from practice at 5 or 5:30 from practice and he comes home, showers, eats, starts his home work he takes about 2 hrs, he does goof off on his phone during this time so I figure he could be getting it done in about an hr. He is at the kitchen table until it is dkne. I think he will figure out time management as the year progresses.

Played sports year round and studied maybe 35-40 min a night in high school and was always in bed before 10
